gremlins 3

After Gremlins 2 turned the original film on its head – with Leonard Maltin reviewing Gremlins 1 in the movie and Gremlins overtaking the projection booth until Hulk Hogan stops them – it seemed to be the last word on the franchise. Decades later, talk of Gremlins 3 is finally real and original screenwriter Chris Columbus has written a script.

Speaking with /Film about the festival hit Patti Cake$, which he produced, Columbus said his script asks a question which may have been on fans’ minds since the original: if all the gremlins come from getting Gizmo wet and feeding his mogwai offspring after midnight, should Gizmo be eliminated?

Rejected Gremlins 3 Pitch

Whether you like it or not, Warner Bros. is still developing a new Gremlins movie. Once rumored to be a remake of the original 1984 horror comedy, recent details have pegged the film as more of a reboot/sequel in the same vein as Jurassic World. While we don’t know any specifics of the story, it has been said that the movie will keep the original film’s mythology intact while retelling the same story 30 years later.

Carl Ellsworth (Goosebumps) was the last writer reported to be hired on the Gremlins reboot back in April of last year, but some details on one of the rejected ideas for the project have just come to light thanks to Freddy vs. Jason writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift posting a couple of pages from their pitch. Even though this story won’t make it to the big screen, it’s cool to see how this rejected Gremlins 3 pitch answers a big question about one of the three Mogwai rules. Read More »

gremlins 3

We’ve been hearing rumors of Gremlins reboot for quite some time now and while a significant portion of movie fandom would rather the Powers That Be leave this one alone, the massive success of Jurassic World seems to have galvanized everyone involved. “If one beloved franchise can get away with a sequel that is also a reboot set decades after the original film, why not Gremlins?” is the line of thinking on display.

The latest news on the project comes from Zach Galligan, the star of the first two movies. You should grab the requisite pinch of salt before reading his new statements on the subject of Gremlins 3 – this would be like asking Mark Hamill about the plot of a new Star Wars movie in 2012.

Warner Bros. Trying to Reboot ‘Gremlins’

Despite persistent rumors of another sequel, the Gremlins franchise has somehow managed to stay clear of the current craze of remaking / rebooting / sequelizing old movies. Last year, producer Frank Marshall said that he thought the films should be left alone, and that a remake was unlikely to ever get made. Fans everywhere breathed a sigh of relief, and went about their business.

But Hollywood can get very stubborn when it comes to a franchise as fondly remembered as Gremlins is, and so Warner Bros. is now pushing hard for reboot rights. Worse still, there actually seems to be a chance that Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment will hand them over. Where’s a bright light when you need one? More details after the jump.

Summer time is sequel time. For the purposes of this particular article, it’s the time for sequels that don’t exist yet and, for all we know, may never exist. A hint: don’t warm up the popcorn just yet. Read More »
