While it’s understandable that some diehard fans think the very idea of another Star Wars trilogy is unforgivable sacrilege, we’re more inclined to think it could be an unexpected blessing. Disney’s got their hands on one of the richest mythologies in pop culture, and enough clout that it can book some serious talent to do it justice. So with that in mind, we’ve put together a list of ten filmmakers we’d love to see explore a galaxy far, far away — and five we’d rather stayed here on Earth. Hit the jump to read.

Yesterday we saw some new official photos from Gore Verbinski‘s The Lone Ranger, which stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer as Tonto and the Ranger, respectively. Now we’ve got a couple more new photos along with a strange and mysterious teaser poster. The poster highlights Tonto over the Ranger, demonstrating that while Hammer’s character may get the film’s title, this is really Depp’s show. Read More »
There are two big batches of official images to pass along this afternoon. One is for Gore Verbinski‘s The Lone Ranger, and while the pics are technically new, they don’t show off much we haven’t seen. That is, Johnny Depp‘s Tonto looks intense and more than a bit weird; Armie Hammer looks heroic and idealistic, and their world is one well-known to followers of classic Westerns.
The other batch, from the comedy Movie 43, is a bit more unpredictable. The film is a comedy anthology, with 25 shorts from almost a dozen directors: Patrik Forsberg, Peter Farrelly, Elizabeth Banks, Steven Brill, Steve Carr, Rusty Cundieff, James Duffy, Griffin Dunne, James Gunn, Bob Odenkirk and Brett Ratner. The cast includes Kate Winslet, Anna Faris, Halle Berry, Emma Stone, Terrence Howard, Jason Sudaekis, and Johnny Knoxville. The PR line on the film is that it is “not for the faint of heart,” which is fairly enticing. Some of the images below give soft clues about what to expect. Read More »
After over four months of filming and one terrible tragedy, Gore Verbinski‘s big budget Johnny Depp Disney movie The Lone Ranger finished production this week. That work is leading up to a July 3, 2013 release date. Even after cuts were made to the film’s massive budget, rumors have the film costing upwards of $250 million but the first teaser trailer didn’t quite provide a tangable idea of where all that money was going. Now we have a clue.
Several photos from the final week of filming have arrived online and they show an incredibly massive stunt featuring Johnny Depp as Tonto, his stunt double and what appears to be a train flying through the air. Be warned that, while there’s no context surrounding these photos, odds are they contain spoilers. Check out the images after the jump.

On the first official day of San Diego Comic Con 2012, Walt Disney Pictures presented a panel which included footage from their upcoming video game animated feature Wreck It Ralph, Sam Raimi‘s Wizard of Oz prequel OZ: The Great and Powerful, and the first production teaser trailer for Gore Verbinski‘s Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp. After the presentation, I took to the outside of Hall H and recorded a video blog reaction alongside Russ, Angie and Germain. The surprise ending to Disney’s Hall H panel today at San Diego Comic Con was the debut of an “in production” teaser trailer for Gore Verbinski‘s The Lone Ranger. The film stars Armie Hammer (The Social Network, J. Edgar) as the title character, and Johnny Depp as the classic character Tonto.
We’ve known for some time that the film features several sequences involving trains, and that it is Verbinski’s own take on ideas familiar to Western film fans. While the footage on display today was pretty light on Ranger and Tonto, there was enough on screen to give us a good idea of the film’s energy and ambitions. Read More »
Remember months ago when Disney put the development of Gore Verbinski‘s The Lone Ranger on ice because the budget had ballooned up to $250m or more? The studio is probably having flashbacks to that point, because the film is reportedly now over budget to the point where it is going to cost $250m or more; part of that budget overage has to do with the film being way behind schedule.
If the accounts are correct, Gore Verbinski may have to trim scenes back again. So what does that mean for a film that was already rewritten once late in the game, and is now being rewritten again? Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer play the leads, and they’ll play right into Disney’s plan to sell the film to audiences worldwide, but will they be enough to save the film? Read More »
