Flatliners remake

Sony’s remake of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 psychological horror thriller Flatliners stumbled at the box office this past weekend, and limped its way from a 0% up to a 2% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s an abysmal score – even worse than The Emoji Movie – and it’s clear that the film’s premise and stars including Ellen Page, Diego LunaNina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons just weren’t enough to convince audiences that this story was worth telling again.

Would an explicit reference to the original movie been enough to alter the general perception of the film? Probably not, but in a new interview, the remake’s director explains that he cut a moment that specifically tied Kiefer Sutherland‘s character to the events of the first movie because younger audiences were confused by it.

Like any year, 2017 has had some truly excellent films, and then it’s also had some stinkers. As we approach the end of the year and enter awards season, get ready for more excellent films. For now, though, here come the summer runoffs – the films studios had no real faith in and dumped at the dead-end of September. Films like the Flatliners remake, which is now sitting at an uncomfortable 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, as the folks at MovieFone were kind enough to point out. Read more about the Flatliners negative reviews below.

The 15 Worst Horror Remakes Ever Made

halloween remake

This week, a remake of Flatliners will hit theaters and leave us all wondering: “Why?” Look, remakes of horror films are nothing new, but was anyone actually eager for a Flatliners remake? Besides, there already was a film that came very close to being a Flatliners remake; it was called The Lazarus Effect, and it was terrible.

Speaking of terrible, in honor (maybe?) of Flatliners, I’ve gone ahead and broken down the 15 Worst Horror Remakes. You may disagree with these picks; in fact, I know for certain that many people enjoy at least one or two of these films. That’s fine! I welcome your defense of them! ‘Flatliners’ Legacy Cameo Revealed In New TV Spot

Flatliners cameo

Joel Schumacher’s 1990 sci-fi horror movie Flatliners is undoubtedly a goofy film, but it’s also a stylishly directed, visually striking piece of work from a filmmaker that’s often unfairly derided for his later superhero work (hey, Batman Forever is pretty good!). It also has a killer cast that included then-up-and-comers like Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt, and now we know that one of those actors will also appear in the upcoming remake/sequel, too. And based on that selection of names, the culprit may not be who you think.

Join me below to watch a new TV spot that gives away the Flatliners cameo, and while you’re there, stick around for a full trailer for the new version.

flatliners trailer

From producer Michael Douglas comes a remake of Flatliners. Based on Joel Schumacher‘s 1990 film, the premise appears to be more or less the same with some modern touches. It’s a fine movie that doesn’t quite live up to its premise, so unlike a lot of cases, a remake here makes sense. So far, based on the marketing, it doesn’t look like Niels Arden Oplev‘s (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) movie is bringing a whole lot new to the table – except for a strong cast.

Below, watch the new Flatliners trailer.

Flatliners Remake Trailer

If Netflix’s The Discovery wasn’t quite what you were hoping for in a movie that explores what happens after we die, maybe the remake of the 1990 thriller Flatliners will make up for it.

Ellen Page (Juno), Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Nina Dobrev (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), James Norton (Happy Valley) and Kiersey Clemons (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) star in the remake of Joel Schumacher’s film, taking on the roles originated by Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon. They are five medical students who learn about what lies beyond mortality when they stop each others’ heart for a few minutes at a time before immediately resuscitate them. What starts as an almost indescribable thrill that seems to have a positive impact on their brain slowly turns into a nightmare as they are each haunted by something tragic from their past.

jumanji release date

Sony is reorganizing its release calendar, and that means a few big titles are getting shifted around. First off, The Dark Tower has been postponed from February 2017 to summer 2017, as we reported earlier today… and it’s taking over Jumanji‘s slot, which means Jumanji is now getting pushed to Christmas 2017.

Meanwhile, Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver has gone from being a spring movie to being a summer movie, and The Equalizer 2 — the first sequel of Denzel Washington’s entire career — is getting delayed one year to fall 2018. Get full details on the Jumanji release date and more below.  Read More »

Flatliners Sequel

Just a few weeks ago, the developing Flatliners remake gained an interesting name with Kiefer Sutherland joining the cast. What’s interesting about the addition of Sutherland to the cast is that he starred in the original 1990 cult favorite thriller, and his involvement in the new take on the story opened up the possibility of this being more of a sequel instead of a true remake. Now we seem to have confirmation of as much from Kiefer Sutherland himself. Find out what the actor had to say about the Flatliners sequel after the jump. Read More »
