A lot of filmmakers have a certain theme they return to time and time again, and for director Drake Doremus it seems to be love in all of its messiness and complications. Like Crazy dealt with the long-distance relationship between an American and a Brit, and Breathe In with the love affair between a married man and a much younger woman. His latest film, Equals, pushes him into the sci-fi realm for the first time… but it’s still a love story at heart, chronicling a romance that unfolds under the most inhospitable of circumstances.
Nia (Kristen Stewart) and Silas (Nicholas Hoult) live in one of those Apple Store dystopias that seem so popular at the cinema these days. All human emotion, including sexual desire, has been eradicated. But Silas and Nia begin to fall for each other when they catch a disease that sparks feeling in its victims, and strike up a dangerously forbidden romance. Watch the Equals trailer after the jump. Kristen Stewart knows a thing or two about forbidden love. She is, after all, still best known for starring in a series of films about a girl and her vampire boyfriend. And Nicholas Hoult‘s done the whole dystopia thing — he’s coming out of the toxic wasteland of Mad Max: Fury Road. Now the two of them are coming together for Equals, Drake Doremus‘ sci-fi love story about two lonely souls who find love in a hopeless place.
Said place is a sterile future where all emotion has been outlawed and eradicated. Or at least that’s what the powers that be are striving for. The truth is that there’s a weird disease going around referred to as “Switched On Syndrome,” which sparks feeling in its victims. Hoult and Stewart play two of the afflicted, who strike up a forbidden passion. Distributor A24 has just dropped the first Equals teaser trailer, and you can watch it after the jump. Read More »
If you’re like me, when you think of romance, you think of the dystopian future depicted in George Orwell’s landmark novel 1984. The novel is just as frightening now as it was decades ago. It is even more appropriate as a piece of social and political observation now than it has ever been. But, y’know, romance!
When the new film from Drake Doremus (Like Crazy) was announced last year, all we knew was that it would be called Equals, that Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult would play a couple, and that the writer/director said ”Like Crazy was about the past and had a very nostalgic feel to it, and kind of about my past. [Breathe In, which arrives this year] is about confronting the idea of love in the present, and then what love means in the future is what I’m interested in exploring next.”
What we didn’t know then but do know now, thanks to Stewart, is that Equals is based in some part on 1984. Read More »
