Shape of Water Reviews

Guillermo del Toro‘s dark fairy tale, The Shape of Water, made a splashy premiere at the Venice Film Festival this week, with early reviews lauding its lush visuals, incisive social commentary, and enchanting love story. It seemed like critics had only praise for the film, with each review gushing that del Toro’s 1960s-set fantasy could easily be his best film since his magnum opus Pan’s Labyrinth.

Starring Sally Hawkins, frequent del Toro collaborator Doug Jones (finally getting a starring role after playing monsters and extras in most of his films), Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer and Richard JenkinsThe Shape of Water is a love story between a mute lab cleaning woman (Hawkins) and a gilled fish creature (Jones) set against the backdrop of the Cold War.

Doug Jones Star Trek Discovery

You probably know Doug Jones as the man who played Abe Sapien in Hellboy, the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, and the Silver Surfer in 2007’s otherwise-forgettable Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. But very soon, you might know him best as Lieutenant Saru, a character on the upcoming CBS All Access drama Star Trek: Discovery.

In the show’s first trailer, we saw that Jones’ alien character was “biologically determined for one purpose alone: to sense the coming of death.” Aside from that, we didn’t know much about him. Now we know all about his alien character’s origins, courtesy of a couple of new interviews. Find out the latest Doug Jones Star Trek Discovery info below.

Guillermo del Toro directing Hellboy 2

The last update we got on Hellboy 3: Don’t get your hopes up. Director Guillermo del Toro has had trouble finding financing for the film, which is bigger in scope compared to the previous Hellboy movies. Hellboy II: The Golden Army got made because a studio head was a fan of del Toro’s and the first movie performed so well on DVD, a market that died around the time the sequel hit home video. Since the movie’s release in 2008, every once in a while del Toro, Ron Perlman, and Hellboy’s creator, Mike Mignola, will discuss the chances of a third installment.

There are no significant or minor developments regarding the project, but del Toro still absolutely wants to make the film and, if enough fans want him to, he’ll meet with Mignola and Perlman to talk about it again.

Han Solo Fan Film

We already know that the next installment under the Star Wars Story banner following Rogue One is a movie that will follow a young Han Solo. Disney and Lucasfilm have already brought on Phil Lord & Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) to direct, and Alden Ehrenreich has been to play the smuggler originated by Harrison Ford in 1977 with Donald Glover as his old buddy Lando Calrissian. But that movie won’t arrive until 2018.

In the meantime, some dedicated Star Wars fans got together to create a rather impressive short film following Han Solo on one of his early adventures. The project is called Han Solo: A Smuggler’s Trade, and while it’s obviously not up to the quality of any of the big screen chapters, but for a production made by fans, it’s one of the better attempts we’ve seen.
