The Shape of Water Q&A

Earlier this week, I visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to see a screening of The Shape of Water, the newest fantasy film from director Guillermo del Toro. The screening was part of Film Independent at LACMA’s ongoing film series and featured a Q&A afterward with del Toro, actors Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, and composer Alexandre Desplat.

Below, you’ll find some of the best stories and quotes from the conversation, including how a drunken del Toro originally pitched Hawkins on her part, how the music ties in with the film’s visual aesthetic, which scene caused someone to vomit on the set, and the odd relationship between the film and the FX vampire series The Strain.

Shape of Water Reviews

Guillermo del Toro‘s dark fairy tale, The Shape of Water, made a splashy premiere at the Venice Film Festival this week, with early reviews lauding its lush visuals, incisive social commentary, and enchanting love story. It seemed like critics had only praise for the film, with each review gushing that del Toro’s 1960s-set fantasy could easily be his best film since his magnum opus Pan’s Labyrinth.

Starring Sally Hawkins, frequent del Toro collaborator Doug Jones (finally getting a starring role after playing monsters and extras in most of his films), Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer and Richard JenkinsThe Shape of Water is a love story between a mute lab cleaning woman (Hawkins) and a gilled fish creature (Jones) set against the backdrop of the Cold War.

Check out what some of the early The Shape of Water reviews have to say below.

Doug Jones Star Trek Discovery

You probably know Doug Jones as the man who played Abe Sapien in Hellboy, the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, and the Silver Surfer in 2007’s otherwise-forgettable Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. But very soon, you might know him best as Lieutenant Saru, a character on the upcoming CBS All Access drama Star Trek: Discovery.

In the show’s first trailer, we saw that Jones’ alien character was “biologically determined for one purpose alone: to sense the coming of death.” Aside from that, we didn’t know much about him. Now we know all about his alien character’s origins, courtesy of a couple of new interviews. Find out the latest Doug Jones Star Trek Discovery info below.

Guillermo del Toro directing Hellboy 2

The last update we got on Hellboy 3: Don’t get your hopes up. Director Guillermo del Toro has had trouble finding financing for the film, which is bigger in scope compared to the previous Hellboy movies. Hellboy II: The Golden Army got made because a studio head was a fan of del Toro’s and the first movie performed so well on DVD, a market that died around the time the sequel hit home video. Since the movie’s release in 2008, every once in a while del Toro, Ron Perlman, and Hellboy’s creator, Mike Mignola, will discuss the chances of a third installment.

There are no significant or minor developments regarding the project, but del Toro still absolutely wants to make the film and, if enough fans want him to, he’ll meet with Mignola and Perlman to talk about it again.
