In almost every actor’s career there comes a time to make a clean-cut family tearjerker, and it seems that time has really come for John Krasinski, Drew Barrymore, Tim Blake Nelson, Stephen Root and many more as they take part in Big Miracle. The film finds Krasinski as a TV journalist stuck in small-town Alaska who discovers three whales trapped in the ice off the coast. Everyone with a soul, from townspeople to the big, bad Soviets, rallies to get the whales back to open water, and enough sympathetic, happy tears will probably be shed in the audience to create a new little whale habitat in every multiplex.

Three more have signed on for What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Kirk Jones‘ adaptation of the classic pregnancy manual. The comedy follows several different couples, Love Actually-style, as each experiences pregnancy and the miracle of childbirth. Bridesmaids actress Wendi McLendon-Covey will play a colleague and friend of Jennifer Lopez‘ character; True Blood‘s Joe Manganiello will be a single guy whose carefree, glamorous lifestyle is the envy of all the local dads; and Glee star Matthew Morrison has won the part of Evan, who teams up with Cameron Diaz‘ character on a celebrity dance show (really) and eventually gets her pregnant.
In addition to the actors named above, What to Expect will also feature Elizabeth Banks, Chris Rock, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Rodrigo Santoro, Chace Crawford, Rob Huebel, and McLendon-Covey‘s Bridesmaids co-star Rebel Wilson. Dermot Mulroney‘s been in a variety of films over the years, but it’s probably fair to say that most people think of him primarily as a romcom leading man. His best known works include The Wedding Date and My Best Friend’s Wedding, and he was even cast as the generically handsome star of Burn After Reading‘s film-within-a-film, Coming Up Daisy.
It seems appropriate, then, that his first foray into directing would be with yet another fluffy romantic comedy: IFC Films’ unimaginatively titled Love Wedding Marriage, starring Mandy Moore and an occasionally shirtless Kellan Lutz as a pair of newlyweds. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Training Day and Harsh Times writer David Ayer is putting together his next film: a cop drama called End of Watch that he’ll write and direct. Jake Gyllenhaal is now in negotiations to star. Variety says the film is “a gritty drama that follows the friendship between longtime partners.” David Ayer is also tapped to write the remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger action film Commando, but we haven’t heard much about the progress of that film in some time.

Movie blogs like this one run so many stories about gossip, rumor and early attachments, it’s nice to finally write one about that all important green light. A “green light” is the term for when financiers and filmmakers agree on a budget, script, cast and finally give the go-ahead to begin production. And in the realm of movies we report on, it doesn’t always happen.
We’re happy to report that though it took about a year, and we reported on it in the casting phase, The Grey, co-written and directed by Joe Carnahan, starring Liam Neeson, Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Nonso Anozie, and Joe Anderson, has just gotten that all important green light. It’s about a group of oil-rig workers who crash and find themselves stranded on the Alaskan tundra in the presence of a group of deadly wolves. Sounds kind of like Armageddon meets Frozen. Briefly: We still don’t know very much about Kevin Smith‘s long-gestating middle-America horror film Red State, other than that Michael Parks is tapped for a lead role and that the film is based in part on sham ‘preacher’ Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church. But now there’s a logline for the film, which comes via STYD, that clarifies things just slightly:
A group of kids encounters a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism.”
Well, OK, very slightly. Smith is doing a good job keeping this one locked up; he’s talked about wanting to just shoot the movie quietly without giving too many details away, and so far he is successful. The film shoots this fall, so we’ll expect to know more in the next couple months. In addition to Michael Parks, Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Dermot Mulroney, Michael Angarano and Steven Root all seem to have roles. So Gallner and Angarano are in the group of kids, and hopefully Melisssa Leo will be on the preacher’s side.
For the longest time, Kevin Smith’s Red State seemed like a film that would never get made, but bit by bit, the project keeps coming together. The film already has a September shooting date (as tweeted by Smith), and the lead role has been locked in place. And now, the film has a not-yet-confirmed roster of actors to fill out the supporting cast.
The potentials include Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding), Kyle Gallner (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Michael Angarano (The Forbidden Kingdom), Stephen Root (Office Space), and the Oscar nominated Melissa Leo (Frozen River). Learn more after the break. Read More »
