More so than pretty much any movie this summer, you’re going to walk out of Matt Reeves‘ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and think, “How the HECK did they do that?” The combination of technical expertise mixed with dramatic artistry is absolutely magnificent and, somehow, a huge step up from the already-impressive Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Mix those elements with a complex, emotional story of acceptance, family and prejudice, add in a ton of huge action, and you’ve got one of the best films of the summer.
As for that question of “How,” author Matt Hurwitz has your answers in the new book Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of Planet of the Apes: The Art of the Films. Out July 8, it’s filled with concept art and behind the scenes images from both films and, below, we’ve got some exclusive early glimpses. Check out the Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes concept art below. Read More »

Fox and Vice have teamed for an interesting project: three short films which act as prequels to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Collectively called Before the Dawn, these shorts explore the time between the end of the last film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the ten years in which the so-called Simian Flu devastated the human population. Each takes place at a different point in the timeline, marking one, five, and ten-year points in the pandemic. All three Dawn of the Planet of the Apes prequel shorts are below, along with a trailer for a related documentary. Read More »
20th Century Fox has given us an web-exclusive illustrated “Hail Caesar” poster for Matt Reeves‘ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes to premiere this morning. The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes illustrated poster was created by UK artist Matt Needle, putting the spotlight on Caesar, the leader of the apes played by Andy Serkis in the film via performance capture. Its nice that big movie studios are starting to release their own Mondo-style illustrated posters, if only for online promotion. Hit the jump to see the poster in full.

Composer Michael Giacchino has been known to have a little fun with the titles of the songs he creates for movies, but his original motion picture score for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is particularly full of puns. For example, one of the tracks in titled “Close Encounters of the Furred Kind”, while his end credits score is titled “Planet of the End Credits”. Check out the full Dawn of the Planet of the Apes soundtrack listing after the jump. Don’t worry, the track listing it spoiler free (unless of course you consider a track title like “Enough Monkeying Around” a spoiler).

This new featurette is more about the scope of the effects as a whole. There is some info about performance capture here — specifically in how many small cameras were used in large locations, to capture all the actors’ movements. But there’s a lot more about other aspects of the film. Watch this new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes effects reel below.

It’s less than a month until we return to an Earth that has been dramatically reshaped into a place that could soon be called a planet of the apes, and Fox has released one last big look at its latest chapter in the long-running saga. Half of this final Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer is all about brewing conflict and watching humanity further lose hold on the planet.
And then things just explode, and that war that Caesar talks about in his steadily-improving speech just explodes. A lot of the footage here is stuff we’ve seen before, but that’s OK; it’s good to save the best stuff for the final film. And Matt Reeves’ sequel to the surprise hit from 2011 looks like it firmly takes the reins of the story in a way that could be very satisfying for Apes fans, indeed. Read More »
