dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-FX

In a couple weeks we’ll see what director Matt Reeves and the huge effects team at WETA pulled off in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but in the meantime Fox is showing off some more of their work in short form. The studio has already released one little video that gave us some side-by-side glimpses at the original actors on set and the final rendered apes. This new featurette is more about the scope of the effects as a whole. There is some info about performance capture here — specifically in how many small cameras were used in large locations, to capture all the actors’ movements. Final Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer

It’s less than a month until we return to an Earth that has been dramatically reshaped into a place that could soon be called a planet of the apes, and Fox has released one last big look at its latest chapter in the long-running saga. Half of this final Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer is all about brewing conflict and watching humanity further lose hold on the planet.

And then things just explode, and that war that Caesar talks about in his steadily-improving speech just explodes. A lot of the footage here is stuff we’ve seen before, but that’s OK; it’s good to save the best stuff for the final film. And Matt Reeves’ sequel to the surprise hit from 2011 looks like it firmly takes the reins of the story in a way that could be very satisfying for Apes fans, indeed.  Read More »

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes featurette

When we left off in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, humanity wasn’t doing so well. Still, it’s been a shock to see just how not well they’re doing in the trailers for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which picks up about ten years later in narrative time.

During that period, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his intelligent ape brethren have become more powerful than ever, acquiring horses and machine guns along the way. Meanwhile, the human race has been reduced to cowering in fear — when they’re not lashing out in ill-advised anger, that is.

A new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes featurette explains how homo sapiens got from point A to point B, incorporating Rise scenes, fake news reports, real news reports, and stock footage of concerned-looking scientists. Watch the video after the jump.
