Julia Stiles is set to co-star in David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook, based on Matthew Quick‘s novel. The story centers around a former high school teacher (Bradley Cooper) who’s just been released from a four-year stint at a mental hospital into the care of his mother (Jacki Weaver). Upon his release, he tries to win back his ex-wife but eventually falls into a romance with an troubled young widow (Jennifer Lawrence). Stiles has landed the role of Lawrence’s older sister.
But perhaps the more exciting bit of news is that Chris Tucker, who entered talks last month to play Cooper’s friend from the institution, is now in final negotiations to take the role. I got a little worried last week, when stories of Weaver’s casting didn’t mention Tucker’s name, but I’m happy to see I was overreacting. If Tucker finalizes the deal, Silver Linings Playbook will be his first film part since 2007′s Rush Hour 3. [Deadline]

Good things keep coming for the stars of Animal Kingdom, as Jacki Weaver lands a role in David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook. Weaver will play Bradley Cooper‘s mother in the film, based on Matthew Quick‘s novel about a former high school teacher (Cooper) who’s just been released from a four-year stint at a mental institution into the care of his mother. Upon his release, the protagonist initially tries to win back his ex-wife but eventually falls into a romance with an eccentric young widow (Jennifer Lawrence).
Also signed on for the project is Robert De Niro in an unnamed part. Chris Tucker was said to be in talks for the part of Cooper’s pal from the institution, but the latest reports don’t mention him, so I’m guessing he’s out. The career of Chris Tucker is an unusual one, as movie star careers go. He’s got only eleven feature credits, three of which are for very small roles. He’s primarily a star based on The Fifth Element and three Rush Hour movies. Because those three Rush Hour movies have earned an amount of money that will greatly sadden you (just under a billion dollars globally before licensing, DVD, etc.) he probably doesn’t have to work all that much. And so he doesn’t.
But now Tucker may be following up his last screen appearance, in 2007′s Rush Hour 3, with roles in either David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook or Akiva Schaffer‘s action comedy Neighborhood Watch. Read More »
Let’s quickly trace the evolution of 2 Guns, which is intended as an action film in which two undercover law officers end up investigating each other, both failing to realize that the other is a lawman, with mob money and the CIA wrapped up in the tale.
2 Guns is based on a comic written by Steven Grant with art by Mat Santolouco, and originally had a script by Blake Masters. When mentioned a while ago it was a possible vehicle to re-team Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. Owen Wilson dropped out, and David O. Russell came on to rewrite and possibly direct. But Russell is out now, as is Vince Vaughn. Now the only talent attached to the story is Mark Wahlberg. Read More »

Way back in late 2010, we reported on the potential casting of Bradley Cooper in the lead role for David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook. At some point, however, Mark Wahlberg emerged as the star of the film, and Cooper was no longer associated with the project. Now, it’s looking like we’re back to square one, with Wahlberg out and Cooper back in. Wahlberg has dropped out of the film due to a scheduling conflict with a different project (possibly Broken City with Allen Huges), and Cooper is currently in talks to replace him.
Also in talks for the movie is Robert De Niro, who met with Russell earlier this summer regarding an unnamed part. Jennifer Lawrence is still set to co-star as the main character’s love interest. Jennifer Lawrence is reportedly leading the pack of actresses vying for David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook, ahead of the likes of seemingly every rising (or recently risen) starlet in town. Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough, and Olivia Wilde were all among Lawrence’s competitors for the part. If the deal closes, Lawrence would begin shooting this fall after The Hunger Games wraps.

This is something that will likely go down as a bit of ‘what if?’ trivia. Despite the fact that scheduling and other factors caused the death of Guillermo del Toro‘s Disney Double Dare You deal, it looks like he’s still interested in working for the Mouse. Or, more to the point, it sounds like the fact of not being able to make The Hobbit has left the writer/director with the desire to film a dragon, and doing so through Disney might be one way to scratch that particular itch.
