The Fighter has been struggling to make it to the big screen for the last two years, and is finally back on track with David O Russell at the helm. Production is set to begin in a couple weeks, and the final casting announcements are being made.
Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Adams is in final negotiations to star opposite Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg in the sports bio. Adams will play “a tough, gritty bartender and former college high-jumper” who ends up dating Wahlberg’s character. I can just imagine Adams performance now, complete with what I’m sure will be a very believable Massachusetts accent. But could it possibly rival Amy Ryan’s performance in Gone Baby Gone?
A new interview with Jessica Biel in The Orlando Sentinel fills us in on the current state of play with David O. Russell’s screwballish sex and politics satire Nailed. Unfortunately, she doesn’t paint a pretty picture.
You probably recall that the film was shut down four times and that James Caan quit after a bust up with the director, and you may even remember reports that the film was ’safely’ into post production. But some six months later, this post production is still dragging on however, and that’s hardly encouraging. I’m getting a Margaret vibe here, and starting to fear we may never see the film - or at least not a cut that comes director approved.

David O Russell To Direct Christian Bale in The Fighter

The Fighter has been struggling to make it to the big screen for the last two years, and is finally back on track with David O Russell at the helm. Christian Bale is now signed to play Dicky Eklund, a real life boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded after a run of drugs and crime. Dicky shepherded his half-brother “Irish” Micky Ward in a Rocky-like rise to world lightweight champion. Ward fought throughout the mid-’80s and ’90s, but he’s best remembered for three battles with Arturo Gotti, two of which went down as the greatest in the history of the sport. Ward lost each one.
David O. Russell to Direct The Silver Linings Playbook

Today, The Hollywood Reporter tell us that The Weinstein Co. are behind David O. Russell’s adaptation of Matthew Quick’s novel The Silver Linings Playbook. This news popped up a few times recently in interviews with Quick and a YouTube video of the author reading from the novel, but nobody much noticed it; and the story of Russell’s involvement originally broke over a year ago, even before Nailed began shooting. If only there were more hours in the day for me to trawl the web and bring links to you. I would do it, you know? Because I love you.
Taking the Hollywood Report at face value, the screenplay hasn’t been written yet. In fact, it has, and in the video - which you can see below the break - Quick describes it as “phenomenal” and says he’s “really excited about” it. Every screenplay of Russell’s that I know, so far filmed or not, is pretty darn good so I’m inclined to believe him. And it’s good to know the creator is on side, at the very least to quell worries of bad PR and creative battles. We all know, I think that Russell loves a good creative battle (or do I just mean ‘I know we all think’?).
