Justice League Dark is finally happening. Doug Liman has been set to direct Warner Bros.’ DC adaptation. Scott Rudin will produce, and Michael Gilio will write the screenplay. If you’ve got a bit of déjà vu that may be because Liman was recently linked to another superhero project, 20th Century Fox’s Gambit. As you’ve probably guessed, he’s not making that one anymore.

The mere fact that a Suicide Squad movie is coming out next year is proof that Warner Bros. isn’t afraid to dip its toe into the weirder corners of the DC comic book world. And that’s great news because the weirder corners of the DC universe are where the best characters tend to hang out. Forget about Batman and Superman and their dawn of justice – let’s see the dark and magical likes of John Constantine and Deadman and Swamp Thing and Zantana team up on the big screen.
While we’re bummed that Justice League Dark will no longer be a Guillermo del Toro joint, we’re excited that it’s still in the works and is still utilizing many of the characters and concepts from del Toro’s screenplay. The film is far enough along in development that the names of certain actors and actresses are starting to come crawling out of the rumor mill. So who’s in contention for Constantine, Swamp Thing, and Madame Xanadu? And who apparently the frontrunner to play villain Anton Arcane? Let’s dive in.

So is Shazam part of the DC Movie Universe, or not? We originally thought it might be, but the film is from New Line rather than Warner Bros. proper, and comments from New Line head Toby Emmerich have suggested Shazam might be off on its own. But now a new post from DC has led people to thinking that the character Shazam is part of the same universe that also features Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman — which naturally has us wondering if he’ll fit into the big Justice League story after all. So, first off, is the big question: Is Shazam in the DC Movie Universe as an active group participant, or not? Read More »
This weekend, as you sit at home with your families, eat turkey, watch football, maybe head out and see The Force Awakens trailer, the executives at Warner Bros. are going to be doing something even better. They’re going to be reading the script to Guillermo del Toro‘s Justice League Dark, aka Dark Universe.
The director confirmed he and his team have completed the team up script, which will feature Swamp Thing, The Demon, John Constantine, Deadman, The Spectre, and others and turned it into Warner Bros. If they like it, we may be seeing the film sooner rather than later. Read more about the Justice League Dark script below. Read More »
Will Guillermo del Toro ever get to direct Justice League Dark? Who knows. He’s finishing up an October 2015 release in Crimson Peak, and then moves into 2017’s Pacific Rim 2. After that his schedule is hypothetically open. At Comic-Con, Legendary chairman Thomas Tull teased the filmmaker about possibly letting him make passion projects Into the Mountains of Madness or Hellboy 3 in the future. That leaves Justice League Dark as one of multiple films he either doesn’t make until the next decade or leaves to someone else.
Still, exploration of that dark DC Comics universe will start this fall in the NBC show Constantine. In a new interview del Toro said that while Warner Bros. has given him full freedom when writing the film, he would be open to tying the show into the movie, or maybe even casting Matt Ryan, if the opportunity presented itself. Read about the potential Justice League Dark Constantine crossover below. Read More »
At the movies, Marvel is currently kicking DC’s ass. Yes Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies were fantastic. Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was a very strong start to the development of a potentially bigger world. But Marvel is already in Phase 2 of a cinematic universe, is setting up Phase 3, has a TV show that ties in on the air, with four more shows announced.
DC has Arrow, with a version of the Flash set to debut on that show, but those guys are unrelated to the big-screen heroes. Then there’s Batman vs. Superman on the horizon, but besides some rumors of hypothetical Flash and Justice League films, that’s it for the big screen in the near future.
If we are to believe Guillermo del Toro though, they have a very big plan, we just don’t know all about it yet. The director is attached to a potential DC film called Justice League Dark, which will feature Swamp Thing, The Demon, John Constantine, Deadman, The Spectre and others. He said DC is planning an “entire DC universe” including movies, TV and more. Read More »
With Guillermo del Toro‘s new film Pacific Rim out this week, there’s sure to be tons of news on his upcoming projects. He’ll next direct the star-studded haunted house thriller Crimson Peak, but he also continues to work on Dark Universe (aka Justice League Dark), the DC Comics inspired team up featuring some of the more supernatural characters in the DC Universe such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, the Demon, Deadman, the Spectre and Zatanna.
Del Toro confirmed not much has changed since our last update on the film. He’s still writing a big outline and waiting for their ideal screenwriter to become available. One thing that has changed, however, is that the DC Cinematic Universe has kicked off in a new way with the release of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Del Toro says, though nothing is set in stone yet, he’d definitely like his film to have continuity with Man of Steel and whatever else DC has in store. Read More »
At a comic book conventions Guillermo Del Toro is a god, both for the goodies he brings and the goodies he announces for the future. At WonderCon 2013, Del Toro brought footage from Pacific Rim, which is out this year, but also discussed what’s next. As we know, he’ll first direct Crimson Peak. He has also been working on Dark Universe, aka Justice League Dark, a DC Comics team-up film featuring some of the company’s darker heroes: Swamp Thing, the Demon, Deadman, the Spectre and Zatanna.
Del Toro revealed he’s recently finished the film’s “Bible,” will soon be announcing the screenwriter who’ll work from that bible, and that the film will star John Constantine (the blonde version) who is tasked with recruiting the other members of the team. Read his quote below. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Though Guillermo Del Toro always seems like he has a dozen projects on his plate, very few of them are actively being shot; they’re all in various stages of development. From time to time, he dabbles on one or another until new life is breathed into it. He’s currently focused on finishing Pacific Rim for a July release, prepping Crimson Peak to be his follow-up and, in an exciting turn of events, pitching his DC Comics monsters team up picture to the studio.
We’ve heard that team-up film may be called Heaven Sent, then Dark Universe. Some places are now calling it Justice League Dark, but Del Toro confirmed he’s set to tell the Warner Bros. executives about it soon. Read some of his ideas below. Read More »
Not long ago word came down that Guillermo del Toro is working to produce a film, originally referred to as Heaven Sent and now tentatively called Dark Universe, that will feature supernatural DC Comics characters such as Swamp Thing and John Constantine. We didn’t know much about the movie at the time, but now in a new interview del Toro talks about finally hiring a writer — who he refuses to name — and giving some more details about the potential character roster of the film.
