Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2 Trailer

It’s been 15 years since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon hit theaters. And while that might seem a little late for a sequel, Hollywood has been obsessed with returning to dormant films for new franchise opportunities. Upon first inspection, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 doesn’t seem like the most obvious cash grab for Netflix, but there’s a good chance this movie will play big overseas.

Netflix buys Beasts of No Nation

Netflix recently began making inroads into distributing theatrical-quality films, and now they’re just about ready to show off the results. The company has announced scheduling for four upcoming movies: Cary Fukunaga‘s Beasts of No Nation, Adam Sandler‘s The Ridiculous Six, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, and Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.

Crouching Tiger theaters

By premiering Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend in IMAX and on Netflix on the same date, Netflix, IMAX, and The Weinstein Co. are disrupting the traditional theatrical release model. And not surprisingly, traditional theaters are none too happy about that.

Two of the biggest cinema chains in the country, Cinemark and Regal, have just announced that they will not be showing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend (or really any other day-and-date releases) in their IMAX theaters. Hit the jump for more details.

Update: Variety reports the U.S.’ Carmike, Canada’s Cineplex, and Europe’s Cineworld have now joined Cinemark and Regal in refusing to show the movie.

Netflix is getting into the movie-making business. The streaming service announced this week that it would team with Weinstein Co. to give a day-and-date release to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, the sequel to Ang Lee‘s 2000 film. The movie will hit Netflix and IMAX simultaneously in summer 2015.

Fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping is directing this one, with Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as Yu Shu-Lien. Donnie Yen joins the cast as Silent Wolf.
