Since it was first announced, I’ve been wondering what the tone will be for Jon Favreau‘s Cowboys & Aliens. Even coming out of the footage screened at Comic-Con, I wasn’t exactly sure. Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci recently gave an interview with SciFiMedia Zone about the film and actually address the tone of the movie.

Jon Favreau has always had great respect for his audience, and that fact has never been more clear than at Comic-Con. They’ve only been shooting Cowboys and Aliens for four weeks, but Favreau worked hard to finish cutting together some footage in hopes of giving fans a taste of its tone and style. Abigail Spencer is joining the cast of Jon Favreau‘s big screen adaptation of the comic book Cowboys and Aliens. Spencer started her career on
the soap All My Children, went on to become the star of Lifetime Television’s Angela’s Eyes, but is probably best known as Don Draper’s mistress Miss Farrell on the AMC series Mad Men. Abigail has appeared in a handfull of indie features, but this is her first feature length movie for a Hollywood studio. HeatVision reports that Spencer will play a prostitute named Alice, “a former lover of Daniel Craig’s character who makes him change his ways.”

Jerry Bruckheim'er photos from the set of Pirates of the Caribbean 4

Back in the old days, people would sneak onto the side of a movie set and snap unwanted photos, and send them to a movie news website for us and other to post. Now it seems like all the set photos are coming from the filmmakers themselves. This morning we have new set photos from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Cowboys and Aliens, taken not by a tourist on the sidelines or paparazi, but by director Jon Favreau and Producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Sam Rockwell Joins Cowboys and Aliens

Sam Rockwell will be re-teaming with Iron Man 2/Made director Jon Favreau, joining the cast of Cowboys and Aliens. Written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, the story takes place in the Old West, where “settlers and Native Americans wage a bloody battle for control of the land. But when the Earth is threatened by conquerors from the stars, these sworn enemies must work together to save all humanity.”

HeatVision reports that Rockwell will play a bar owner named Doc who joins in the pursuit of the aliens. The role was originally written as a heavy set man, but the part was rewritten and expanded after Rockwell showed interest. zooey-deschanel

Update: I have been contacted by Zooey Deschanel’s publicist who claims “Zooey is not connected to the project”. You can read the original story below.

Ada Lovelace, a nineteenth-century writer and daughter of Lord Byron, was a wildly interesting woman. She worked on Charles Babbage’s early Analytical Engine, and she is considered a forerunner in the development of machines designed to do more than simple mathematical computations.

Now she may be portrayed on screen by Zooey Deschanel, in what would likely be one of the actresses’ more demanding roles. She’s in talks to play Lovelace in Enchantress of Numbers (a name bestowed upon Lovelace by Babbage)  which would shoot this fall under director Bruce Beresford. That’s the part of the equation that doesn’t thrill me — Beresford makes a lot of workable,  totally unremarkable movies. Sure, Breaker Morant is great, but that was 30 years ago. Let’s not even talk about Driving Miss Daisy, Oscar notwithstanding. [Production Weekly]

After the break, new cast for Cowboys and Aliens and the prequel to The Thing. Read More »

Cool Posts From Around the Web:

He’s had experience with aliens, and he’s turned up in the Old West before, but never at the same time. It could be time to pull one ridiculous fanboy daydream into reality, as it seems like Harrison Ford might well be joining the cast of Cowboys and Aliens.

In case you haven’t been keeping up, this is the Jon Favreau picture with a script by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, initially expected to star Robert Downey Jr. but now cast with Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde and expected to open on July 29th 2011 (or June 24th, according to some doubtful types). What’s it about? Cowboys and aliens. Of course. And adapted from the comic book of the same name . Again, as expected. Oh, and to continue being obvious, the film ‘might’ be shot in 3D.
