Will Guillermo del Toro ever get to direct Justice League Dark? Who knows. He’s finishing up an October 2015 release in Crimson Peak, and then moves into 2017’s Pacific Rim 2. After that his schedule is hypothetically open. At Comic-Con, Legendary chairman Thomas Tull teased the filmmaker about possibly letting him make passion projects Into the Mountains of Madness or Hellboy 3 in the future. That leaves Justice League Dark as one of multiple films he either doesn’t make until the next decade or leaves to someone else.
Still, exploration of that dark DC Comics universe will start this fall in the NBC show Constantine. In a new interview del Toro said that while Warner Bros. has given him full freedom when writing the film, he would be open to tying the show into the movie, or maybe even casting Matt Ryan, if the opportunity presented itself. Read about the potential Justice League Dark Constantine crossover below. Read More »
John Constantine is a tough character to put on screen, and the Constantine pilot constantly struggles with finding its take on the character. Matt Ryan plays the Brit magician, whose business card bills him as a “master of the dark arts,” in a way that demonstrates a clear idea of the character as a damaged but still cocky guy. That’s well and good, and a pretty direct import of the character as often seen in comics.
But the show around Ryan isn’t always so sure of itself. In fact, this pilot is frequently a bit of a mess, and even verges into incoherence. There are some logistical reasons for that latter point, but that doesn’t change the fact that multiple points of this pilot are muddled and unclear. Anyone looking for a more faithful version of the character than seen in the 2005 film will have to wait for the show to really find itself, and I’m not certain new viewers will fare much better. John Constantine is sad; all he wants is a smoke. The rain, however, is not preventing him from lighting up. Restraint comes from the standards & practices department at NBC, which is more powerful than any nicotine patch when it comes to killing off a nicotine habit.
The character, a DC Comics mainstay since his creation by Alan Moore in the mid-’80s, is coming to television via David Goyer and NBC. And despite the fact that Constantine is a serious smoker (such a dedicated smoker, in fact, that lung cancer became a major plot point in his overall story) the network has said “no smoking” to the producers of Constantine. Maybe he can vape?
After the break, pilot director Neil Marshall explains some of the no smoking reasoning. (Note: possible gross spoilers for Hannibal are below, in the form of thumbnail images.) Read More »

The new Constantine show, featuring DC’s grim and sometimes grounded British magician John Constantine, has been the subject of much discussion since it was first announced. David Goyer is spearheading the show, which features Matt Ryan as the lead character. The trailer turned a lot of heads, and public perception of the show took a new turn. Could it be good? It looks like it goes all out with magical elements, at least, but we didn’t have a Constantine premiere date.
Now it seems like the show’s broadcast home, NBC, is treating it like something fit for the Halloween season. The show won’t premiere along with NBC’s other stuff right at the beginning of the fall season, but will be held back for a few weeks. Read More »
