Warner Bros tried hard to push a movie based on the Justice League of America into production before the writers strike. But they couldn’t get all their ducks in a row, and the project was put on an indefinite hold. The names of most of the young cast had been leaked onto the interwebs, with not many fans happy with the choices. And now that the strike is over, Warner has announced that they are pushing forward with plans for a 2009 release.
The contract options of the cast members were not exercised, but the young cast was assured by the studio that they want to make the film with them in it. You can see a full list of the rumored cast below. George Miller is still attached to direct and is in pre-production on the film in Australia. First-time husband and wife screenwriters Michele and Kieran Mulroney are currently polishing up the script.
- Adam Brody – The Flash
- Common – Green Lantern
- Armie Hammer Jr. – Batman
- Megan Gale – Wonder Woman
- D.J. Cotrona – Superman (rumored)
- Hugh Keays-Byrne – Martian Manhunter (rumored)
- Teresa Palmer – Talia Al Ghul (rumored)
I don’t know about you guys, but I was hoping that this project would fall off the map into development hell, later to be reborn with a new non-teen titans vision.

After months and months of people not in the know asking me “Is Keanu Reeves in Watchmen?”, Fox Searchlight Pictures has finally realized their upcoming film The Night Watchman posed a marketing challenge which was sure to create confusion in consumers, especially with buzz growing for the Warner Bros/Zack Snyder adaptation of Alan Moore’s epic superhero tale Watchmen. So Searchlight have decided to do the right thing and rename the film “Street Kings”. Besides, I’m pretty sure that the script for The Night Watchman was penned way after the Moore graphic novel was available in book stores. Although it should be noted that the film is based on a story by James Ellroy. I do remember this film floating around the development ponds for a few years now, once attached to Spike Lee, than Oliver Stone in 2005.
Street Kings stars Keanu Reeves as Tom Ludlow, a veteran LAPD cop who finds life difficult to navigate after the death of his wife. When evidence implicates him in the execution of a fellow officer, he is forced to go up against the cop culture he’s been a part of his entire career, ultimately leading him to question the loyalties of everyone around him. The film also stars Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie, Chris Evans, Naomie Harris, Jay Mohr, John Corbett, Cedric the Entertainer, Amaury Nolasco, Terry Crews, Common and The Game. Street Kings will hit theaters on Friday, April 11th 2008.
Warner Bros is set to announce the official cast for George Miller’s Justice League of America movie next week, but studio spies have leaked a supposed preview of what we should expect. Note: none of the following cast has been officially confirmed, and being late Friday night, it’s likely we won’t hear anything until Monday at earliest. But let’s take a look at the rumored cast of Justice League.
Scott Porter (Speed Racer, Friday Night Lights) is Superman. Created in 1932, Superman is considered to be the most famous comic book character of all time. Born on an alien planet called Kryton, Kal-El was sent to Earth moments before the planet’s destruction. Adopted and raised by a Kansas farmer and his wife, Clark Kent (earth name) was brought up with a strong moral compass. Upon reaching maturity Clark developed superhuman abilities including flight, speed, strength, stamina, durability, senses, intelligence, breath, and heat vision, later resolving to use these for the benefit of humanity. Justice League Superman is supposed to take place in a different continuity than the Bryan Singer and Richard Donner stories.
Adam Brody (The O.C., Thank You For Smoking) is Wally West aka The Flash. Justice League supposedly begins with the funeral of Barry Allen, the second Flash (1956-1986). His nephew (by marriage) Wally West was exposed to electrically charged chemicals at ten years old when he was visiting his uncle’s police laboratory. West donned a copy of his uncle’s outfit and became the young crime fighter named Kid Flash. After Barry Allen was killed, Wally took over as the fastest man alive. The Flash possesses “super-speed,” and superhuman reflexes which allow him to violate certain laws of physics. Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus helmer David Dobkin is signed on to direct a Flash feature film following production of Justice League.
Common (Smokin’ Aces, Wanted) is John Stewart aka The Green Lantern, who first appeared in July 1940. The Green Lantern possesses a power ring that gives him control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it. Greg Berlanti (The Broken Hearts Club) is set to direct a feature film based on the character following the JLA movie. Berlanti is penning the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.
Teresa Palmer (Wolf Creek, The Grudge 2) as Talia Ghul – a recurring love interest for Batman. Her father, Ra’s al Ghul, the leader of a worldwide criminal empire, considers Batman the man most worthy to marry Talia and to become his heir. Not quite heroine, nor villainess Talia has undoubtedly committed criminal acts; but out of loyalty to her father and not for personal gain. She has also saved Batman’s life or helped him on numerous occasions.
Universal has released the movie trailer for the big screen adaptation of Mark Millar’s graphic novel Wanted.
Aside from the terrible dialogue, Angelina Jolie’s overuse of eye makeup, and easily comparisons to The Matrix (read: many consumers will call this a Matrix ripoff), the trailer features a few interesting action moments. But all in all, I was expecting more for acclaimed visual director Timur Bekmambetov, who is best known as the creator of the Night Watch series. This Wanted trailer will be attached to American Gangster on Friday, but watch it now below.

After months of rumors, George Miller is currently hard at work casting Justice League of America. Miller has been in Los Angeles since Saturday, auditioning a lot of young actors in a marathon casting session that started Sunday and continues through Monday. And by young actors, I mean YOUNG ACTORS. This is starting to look more like a Teen Titans movie.
Apparently, Miller wants actors who will be able to grow into their roles over the course of several movies. Did you read that? SEVERAL MOVIES. Until now it has been highly reported that Warner Bros wanted to use this team-up film as a launching pad for eventual single super-hero franchises. It appears that might be the long term plans, but Miller is looking to do more than one JLA movie.
According to Hollywood Reporter, 35 to 40 actors are set to test for Justice League, including: Adam Brody (The O.C.), Joseph Cross (Running With Scissors), D.J. Cotrona (Windfall), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Grindhouse), Michael Angarano (Sky High), Teresa Palmer (Wolf Creek), Max Thieriot (Jumper), rapper Common, Friday Night Lights stars Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki and Scott Porter. According to the report, the test included no costumes, and script pages.
Miller should be making some tough decisions by mid-week, which means we’ll be finding out the casting of f Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and the Martian Manhunter probably by month’s end.
Rap artist Common (Smokin’ Aces) has joined the cast of Universal’s big screen adaptation of the popular Mark Millar graphic novel Wanted.
“I’m about to do this film called Wanted, which is starring Angelina Jolie,” Common informed MTVNews.com. “[It’s also got] Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy, who was also part of The Last King of Scotland with Forest Whitaker. And man, this movie is very exciting to even be talking about.”
I’ve actually begun reading the graphic novel (but at some point put it down). It’s not your usual superhero graphic novel. The movie follows Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), who is offered the opportunity to seek revenge in the murder of his father, who was once a famous super-villainous assassin. Invited by his father’s partner, Sloan (Morgan Freeman), Gibson is mentored by The Fox, Sloan’s second-in-command (Angelina Jolie).
Common will play a character called the Gunsmith.
“I’m basically this dude that’s a master at shooting guns. I’m training this gentleman that’s coming in, who really has certain abilities but doesn’t know it; I’m training him on how to be what he should be.”
Nightwatch series director Timur Bekmambetov is currently filming the movie in Prague.
