For a movie that hinges on a murder plot, Horrible Bosses feels surprisingly lighthearted. That’s because despite the title and the marketing, the film’s draw isn’t the fucked-up wish fulfillment of giving your dirtbag superior what he deserves. Instead, its appeal lies in the easy, enjoyable chemistry of its leads — Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis – and the fun of watching them screw up royally, over and over, in increasingly zany ways. To put it another way, it’s Office Space meets Apatovian buddy comedy, minus the dark stuff and the sweet bits but with more consistent laughs as a result.
For a certain segment of the filmgoing population, the prime appeal of Craig Gillespie‘s new take on the 1985 Todd Holland horror/comedy Fright Night is the presence of David Tennant. He plays Peter Vincent, the stage magician with a deep interest in the occult that high school student Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) attempts to recruit in the fight against a vampire (Colin Farrell) who moves in next door.

Because the new standard for raunchy comedy advertising is based on tried and true red light district methods — show off the goods, in other words — here’s a new red-band trailer for the Jason Bateman / Charlie Day / Jason Sudeikis comedy Horrible Bosses. If you’ve missed the two previous trailers, the film features the three guys as hapless protagonists who enlist the aid of a ‘murder consultant’ (Jamie Foxx) in an attempt to do away with their three bosses, played by Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston. The first trailer for Craig Gillespie‘s remake of Fright Night did a pretty good job of getting across the basics: Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin), his mom (Toni Collette) and his new girlfriend (Imogen Poots) have to deal with a little problem when a vampire (Colin Farrell) moves in next door.
But there was a lot the trailer didn’t touch on, with one character in particular being almost totally MIA. That was Peter Vincent, which Roddy McDowell played perfectly as an aging horror TV host in the original, and here has been reimagined as a Vegas stage magician played by David Tennant. A new trailer arrived last night via the MTV Movie Awards, and it gives a good look at the new Peter Vincent. This is really more like Horrible Bosses Trailer #1.5, because it is basically the first trailer slightly rearranged, with a few more jokes added to each of the ‘boss introduction’ segments. So it shows the same setup where three guys (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day) scheme, in seemingly moronic ways, to knock off their three bosses, played by Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston.

It’s bound to be a slow week as everyone gets back to work from the Memorial Day weekend, so lets start things off with a clip. This is the first semi-extended look at Colin Farrell playing the vampire in Craig Gillespie‘s remake of Fright Night. The character was played in the original by Chris Sarandon — played to great effect, too — and so Colin Farrell has big shoes to fill as far as fans are concerned. This clip will show some of the ways that he and Gillespie have made the vampire a bit different in this version of the film. With an August 2012 release date looming, shooting on Len Wiseman‘s remake of Total Recall is set to begin next week in Toronto. We know that Colin Farrell will be Douglas Quaid and Bryan Cranston will be one of the villains but what of the two ladies in Quaid’s life, so famously portrayed by in the original Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin? Previous reports have now confirmed to be true as Wiseman’s wife, Kate Beckinsale, will be playing Lori, Quaid’s wife in his “normal” life and Jessica Biel will be Rachel, the girl Quaid meets in his spy life. Also just announced is that Bill Nighy, who played a pretty gruesome character in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, has been cast as Quatto, the leader of the resistance.
