The summer movie season is almost upon us. Comic book movies, reboots, spin-offs, and an unwanted sequel or two – they’re all coming out these next four months. We’re looking forward to more than a few of them, but I’m more hopeful for some of the movies coming to on-demand, steaming services, and local arthouse theaters this summer. Last week, we brought you the list of our most anticipated wide releases arriving this summer. And now, here’s the companion pieces: the 15 limited releases we’re most excited to see!

A few of the titles listed in our indie-themed 2017 summer movie preview below, including Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, are set to go wide after a small launch. However, keep your eyes open – most of these movies may require you to actively seek them out…and a fair number of them will surely prove worth the effort!

Chuck Liev Schreiber

I’ve seen all of the Rocky movies a handful of times, but I’ve somehow never thought to do any research into writer/star Sylvester Stallone’s inspiration for his underdog boxing story. Sly apparently wrote the script in three and a half days after watching an unknown fighter named Chuck Wepner beat the odds and miraculously go 15 rounds against one of the greatest boxers of all time, Muhammad Ali, and now IFC Films is telling Wepner’s story in a new biopic starring Liev Schreiber. Check out the Chuck trailer below.

Party Down / Chuck

Veronica Mars‘ successful Kickstarter campaign opened up a whole new route for TV makers hoping to revive their cancelled series, and Chuck‘s Zachary Levi, for one, hopes to take advantage of it. Meanwhile, one TV maker who wants to stick with a more conventional approach for his next project is Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas himself, who says Party Down will likely take a more conventional path to the big screen. Hit the jump to read more.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS
(DVD available as single-disc and 2-Disc Super-Sized Edition)
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is one of the best movies of 2009. And in response to all the double-takes that I suspect I’m getting right now, I say: No, seriously. Let’s forgo the whole “fun for the whole family” spiel for a moment, because that could just as easily refer to any kid’s film that succeeds in not making the parents want to gouge their eyes out. This movie though, is something else. This movie is something special. While Pixar has the market cornered on heartfelt, story-driven entertainment, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs dominates with its gags, delivering 90 minutes of non-stop, brilliantly funny lunacy. It’s a film destined to become a favorite amongst geeks, with most of its humor seemingly being geared specifically toward that crowd (which makes sense, given that the film is written & directed by two of the creators of Clone High, a hilarious but short-lived animated TV series with similarly geeky sensibilities). Some viewers may even be taken aback by just how outright weird it can often be, but it’s those very additions that make the film so oddly wonderful. From the minute the title blasts onto the screen in all its glitzy, retro glory, the movie is like one big sugar high. Before you even have a chance to be worn down by its whimsical, hyperactive nature, it expands into a cunning yet playful parody of the disaster movie genre in all of its forms, delivering a number of genuinely thrilling action sequences in the process. You’re not likely to confuse the film as anything other than insubstantial fluff entertainment, but who cares? It’s easily some of the most fun I’ve had watching a movie in a long while, and is deserving of all the praise it can get.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Single-disc DVD – Director’s commentary. 2-disc DVD – Includes everything on the single-disc DVD, as well as extended scenes, early development scenes, a making of featurette, another featurette on the voice talent, a “Raining Sunshine” music video with an additional behind the scenes feature and sing-along function, and Flint’s Food Fight Game. Blu-ray – Includes everything on both DVDs, as well as a digital copy of the film.

Good news Chuck fans! Pretty much everything great that could be announced for the series prior to its season three return has happened today. The original plan was for the show to return in March, but we’ve learned that Chuck will be returning on Sunday, January 10, with two episodes back-to-back. The series will then resume its regular time slot on Monday, January 11 at 8pm EST, taking over Heroes‘ previous throne. Heroes will be shifted to Mondays at 9pm.

And if that’s not enough to get you excited, we’ve also learned that NBC has ordered six episodes beyond the initial 13 episode run—bringing Chuck season three to a healthy 19 episodes.

If you had issues with the V series premiere tonight, there is a chance that the series could get better as the season goes on, especially now that we’ve learned that Chuck executive producer/writer Scott Rosenbaum will be taking over the show as executive producer/showrunner. The fledgling series is no stranger to creative struggles. Original showrunner Jeff Bell (Angel, Alias) was replaced in the summer by Scott Peters (The 4400), who also wrote the pilot. Peters will continue working on the show, but the heavy lifting will now be Rosenbaum’s duty.
