Chloë Grace Moretz has never been one to shy away from edgy roles, starting with her breakthrough turn as violent, foul-mouthed Hit-Girl in 2010′s Kick-Ass. Even so, her latest gig is bound to raise some eyebrows.
The 16-year-old actress will play a young prostitute in The Equalizer, Antoine Fuqua‘s big-screen adaptation of the ’80s TV series. Moretz joins Denzel Washington, who leads as a retired secret agent with a dark past. Hit the jump to find out how Moretz wound up with the part.

A couple generations after Brian de Palma first brought it to the big screen, Stephen King‘s Carrie is getting a new cinematic interpretation this fall by director Kimberly Peirce. The first teaser trailer hit all the way back last year, and we’ve had plenty of blood-soaked posters since then, but now we finally have a full-length trailer that offers a better idea of Peirce’s updated vision.
This version of the tale stars Chloë Grace Moretz as the telekinetic teen, and Julianne Moore as her unhinged religious mother. Gabriella Wilde, Portia Doubleday, Ansel Elgort, Alex Russell, and Judy Greer also appear. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

The first Kick-Ass featured but a handful of costumed heroes and villains, but Kick-Ass 2 will introduce us to a whole lot more. The Jeff Wadlow-directed sequel sees Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) joining forces with the do-gooder team Justice Forever, while Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) refashions himself The Mother Fucker and amasses an evil army of his own.
A new series of character posters offers a closer look at the three returning players, while introducing us to three new faces: Mother Russia (Olga Kurkulina) and Black Death (Daniel Kaluuya) on the side of bad, and Night-Bitch (Lindy Booth) on the side of good. Remakes of decades-old films are a common sight at the multiplex these days, but even by those standards Identity Films and Flat Penny Films are reaching pretty far back. The two companies have just acquired the rights to Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning play State of the Union, which was adapted into a movie by Frank Capra in 1948.
That picture starred Spencer Tracy as a presidential candidate backed by a newspaper magnate, played by Angela Lansbury. Katharine Hepburn portrayed Tracy’s estranged wife. While State of the Union isn’t really considered a career highlight for any of them, they still leave some big shoes for the new cast to fill. [Variety]

Over a decade after it kicked into gear with X-Men and Spider-Man, the superhero movie trend shows no signs of flagging. Costumed heroes will keep going strong in 2013 with several more high-profile releases, including Man of Steel, Kick-Ass 2, The Wolverine, and Thor: The Dark World. While we’ve haven’t seen trailers for most of them so far (Man of Steel excepted) the latest issue of Empire Magazine offers a little taste of each movie with some new images.

If you were perhaps looking for a companion piece to The Flowers of War, in which a big western star (Christian Bale) played in a film about Chinese history, then Back to 1942 might be it. Here Adrien Brody and Tim Robbins are two men caught up in social and political upheaval in China’s Henan province, which in the film’s timeline is enduring the worst famine in modern Chinese history.
There’s a gritty look to much of the footage here that looks great; this is the sort of giant film that Chinese directors such as Feng Xuigang — who directed here — have been able to put together lately with increased funding at home. But there’s also an earnestly serious tone here that almost veers towards the unintentionally comic that I can’t tell if the film will play well. Regardless, check out the trailer below. Read More »
