The U.S. trailer for Lars von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac Volume II is now online and, finally, Charlotte Gainsbourg gets to shine. Nymphomaniac as a whole tells the story of Joe (Gainsbourg), a woman whose wanton sexuality has literally left her on the street. A man, played by Stellan Skarsgård, helps her out by listening to her story. Volume I focuses on her younger years, which means Gainsbourg is mostly a passive participant. (That film is On Demand now and hits theaters Friday.) Volume II gets into Joe’s older years, which means it features much more of Gainsbourg than the evocative, explicit and powerful first volume.
Nympomaniac Volume II hits theaters April 4 and on VOD Friday, March 21. Check out the trailer below. Read More »

Last week, producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen revealed that the cut of Nymphomaniac that’d make it to Danish theaters wouldn’t be the one Lars von Trier wanted to make. His director’s cut was a butt-numbing 5 1/2 hours long, prompting distributors to whittle it down to a more marketable four hours.
However, Jensen now adds that the longer version could find a release after all, if von Trier really wants it to. It’ll just have to go through alternate routes. Hit the jump to read his explanation, and to check out two more steamy posters.

All you have to say is “Lars von Trier sex movie” to get someone interested in Nymphomaniac. The controversial director has told many visceral and beautiful stories over his career, often with a great sexual frankness, that the idea of him making full movie about sexuality just screams “potential.”
Speaking of screaming, fourteen character posters for the film have just been released that are sure to make even more people excited about the film. They show the film’s stars — actors as Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Stellan Skarsgård, Christian Slater, and Charlotte Gainsbourg — in their most intimate moments. I believe on The League they call it “Vinegar Strokes,” the moment right before, and during orgasm. Check out these provocative posters below. Read More »
Lars von Trier may have been banned (or “banned”) from Cannes two years ago for statements made while promoting Melancholia, but that hasn’t stopped him from having a presence at the fest this year. His new film(s), the two-part Nymphomaniac, weren’t finished in time for the fest, but the release of a new image (above) and a press release are keeping Trier in the global cinema conversation as Cannes kicks off this year.
Click the pic above for a larger version and you’ll be able to see actors such as Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Udo Kier, Uma Thurman, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth, Stellan Skarsgård, Christian Slater, and star Charlotte Gainsbourg, as well as the director. And hit the jump for a press release from Trier’s producer, announcing a Christmas Day opening in Denmark. Magnolia has the film in the US, and hasn’t announced a release date yet. Read More »
Lars von Trier‘s new film, Nymphomaniac, isn’t being shown at the Berlinale this week, but a sizzle reel is being displayed to potential distributors, just as Trier did with Melancholia a couple years ago.
Magnolia, the same company that handled Trier’s last film in North America, is now the front-runner to acquire the new movie, which depicts the full sexual life of a woman played by Charlotte Gainsbourg. The film also features actors such as Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, and Stacy Martin, and has been assumed to be a Cannes debut despite the fact that the festival banned Trier a couple years ago.
Magnolia is reportedly ready to pony up $2m for the film, which seems like a lot for a picture that will have niche interest. But then remember that it is being crafted in hardcore and softcore versions, and we can guess that the company sees a good marketing angle. After the break, a new still from the film shows us what one of the movie’s sexual encounters is going to be. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
It’s been almost two years since Lars von Trier‘s trouble at Cannes resulted in global headlines and the director being banned from the fest. Which means that, by now, most people have forgotten about any controversy with the director. And so it’s a good time for him to stir up some new talk. Enter Nymphomaniac, the film in which Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as a woman whose sexual history becomes the story.
The film also features Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Jean-Marc Barr, and Udo Kier, and plans to release both R and X-rated versions have been discussed almost since the first announcement of the film.
Now we’ve got the first image from the movie, and it features Gainsbourg’s character in the wake of the beating that sets off the story. Read More »
Today, Lars von Trier begins shooting his new film(s) Nymphomaniac, which tell “the wild and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50.” If things go as planned, the final release will be split into two films, with hardcore and softcore versions of each. Shooting in Germany and Belgium, the project stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as Joe, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac of the title, and the participation of Stellan Skarsgård and Shia LaBeouf is confirmed by a press release announcing the start of production.
That same press release confirms other actors and reveals some new names that will be part of the story, too: Stacy Martin (as young Joe), Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen, Mia Goth, Jens Albinus, Severin von Hoensbroech, Peter Gilberg Cotton, Nicolas Bro, Tabea Tarbiat, Janine Romanowski, Jesper Christensen, Tania Carlin, Felicity Gilbert and Shanti Roney.

What’s good for Harry Potter and Twilight is now good for cinema’s most famous provocateur, Lars von Trier. We know the director is preparing to make Nymphomaniac, in which Charlotte Gainsbourg will play the adult version of a character whose erotic life we are shown “from the age of zero to the age of 50.”
That’s a lot of time to get across in one film, but now Trier has some space to breathe. Nymphomaniac‘s producer has revealed that the project will be split into two films, with one covering “her childhood and adolescence. The second part will deal with her adulthood.”
So, yes, that means that Lars von Trier is going to release a film dedicated to exploring the sexual life of a child. Interns at Fox News are already hard at work crafting outraged headlines. More details (on the films, not the predicted controversy) below. Read More »
The idea of presenting an ‘official synopsis’ for any given upcoming film is typically pretty dull, as these plot summaries often do little more than recap what we already know about a story. Things are a bit different, however, for a movie like Lars von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac. The director has joked about the film since his appearance last year at Cannes, but the project is no gag.
Nymphomaniac will star Charlotte Gainsbourg, making this her third film with Trier, and likely feature Stellan Skarsgard as well. The film is said to be extremely sexually explicit, with plans to release both softcore and hardcore versions to different exhibitors. A few more details on the movie came to light today, and can be found after the break.
