Cars 2 Trailer

Walt Disney Pictures has released a new movie trailer for Pixar’s Cars 2.

They are really playing up the film’s spy storyline, but nothing I’m seeing is making me interested in this sequel. The first film is in all accounts Pixar’s worst movie to date. It wasn’t even very profitable at the box office, but made billions in toy/merchandise sales. I was hoping that Lasseter may have found some heartfelt hook (I loved the Route 66 storyline in the first film, but it came in way too late) but the trailers thus far present a storyline which looks like a sad excuse to cash in at Toys r Us. And don’t get me wrong, I understand this is the movie BUSINESS, but I have come to expect more from Pixar. They are a studio-run entity which time and time again have produced films which are at the perfect intersection of entertainment and art.

A Cars spin-off called Planes has been in development for some time by DisneyToon Studios but we’ve known little about the story. All we knew is that it would be a direct to DVD title somehow related to cars, being developed as ““a semi-sequel and spinoff franchise to Cars, one meant to take advantage of the enormously lucrative direct-to-video market.”

Now the film has been officially announced with a story revolving around small-town dreamer Dusty who wants to enter a globe-circling air race, but is afraid of heights. Let me guess: he gives up on his dream of winning the race and takes a job flying movie ad banners low over the crowds at Comic Con instead. Or maybe not. All the official info is in the press release after the break. Read More »

Cool Posts From Around the Web:

Eddie Izzard Joins ‘Cars 2′

When Pixar announced Cars 2 would go international, they weren’t kidding. Besides returning voices like Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt and Tony Shalhoub, actors such as Michael Caine, John Turturro, Jason Isaacs, Joe Mantegna and Emily Mortimer will be adding their recognizable accents as well.

Plus, it was just revealed that famous English comedy Eddie Izzard will play a character named Miles Axlerod, described by The Hollywood Reporter as “a former oil baron who sold off his fortune, converted himself into an electric vehicle and dedicated himself to finding the renewable, clean-burning energy source of the future.”

The THR also reports that John Turturro has joined the cast, but we reported that last week.

John Lasseter Is A Character In ‘Cars 2′

This is by far the coolest addition to the Cars 2 cast yet. John Lasseter, head of Pixar, director of the first film and co-director of the sequel, will be making a cameo appearance in Cars 2 as a “hefty yellow pick-up truck” who serves as a pit crew chief for one of the racing teams. Lasseter was surprised when he found out that his team had created the character, named John Lassetire, as a nod to Pixar’s 25th anniversary. Read more about his reaction and get a full look at the character after the jump. Read More »
