Twenty-four. Bond 24. The new M, Ralph Fiennes, hasn’t even read the script to the next James Bond film, but the actor says he knows when he and Daniel Craig will be sharing martinis. Sam Mendes will start filming the follow-up to Skyfall in October, aimed at a November 6, 2015 release. Read More »

Briefly: Despite the fact that some of the core Skyfall team is returning for the as-yet-untitled Bond 24, one person who won’t return to work at Pinewood is cinematographer Roger Deakins. While it would have been more surprising to find that Deakins was showing up for a Bond sequel, I think many people had hoped that might come to pass, given that his work was utterly intrinsic to the success of Skyfall.

The info comes from Kris Tapley of In Contention, who got it straight from Deakins. We don’t know what the cinematographer’s next film will be; he’s in post on Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken right now and has been working on How to Train Your Dragon 2 as a consultant. Hopefully this means he’ll be free for the next Coen Brothers film. (Though I certainly can’t complain about the work done by Bruno Delbonnel on Inside Llewyn Davis — he came on to shoot the film when Deakins was busy on Skyfall.)

Bond 24 will be written by John Logan and directed by Sam Mendes, with Daniel Craig returning as James Bond. It is scheduled for release on October 23, 2015 in the UK and November 6, 2015 in the US.

Sam Mendes Confirmed to Direct ‘Bond 24′

Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig on Skyfall set

Sam Mendes first said there was little to no chance he’d be back to direct another James Bond film after Skyfall. Producers continued to hope he’d return to the fold, and weeks ago a rumored shortlist of potential directors for the next Bond film was trumped by the unofficial word that Mendes was prepping to sign. (He even downplayed that a bit, afterward.)

Now Columbia Pictures has confirmed that Mendes is signed on to direct Bond 24. Read the full press release after the jump.

Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig on Skyfall set

Briefly: More than likely, Sam Mendes is telling people he’s not yet committed to Bond 24 to forestall any questions about what the movie is going to be. But all the same, the director who once ruled out making another Bond film to follow Skyfall, but who was then all but confirmed to direct Bond 24 (and Bond 25) is saying that nothing is set in stone at this point. Penelope Cruz Rumored For ‘Bond 24′

Penelope Cruz

Briefly: Now that we’ve got the director question solved, casting speculation can begin in earnest for Bond 24, which it seems Sam Mendes will return to direct. Despite the fact that Mendes is going to do a UK and Broadway version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory before getting back in the Bond director’s chair, meaning that the next Bond won’t be out until at least 2015, rumors are already flying that Penelope Cruz is cast in the film.

With Bond 24 not due for some time we’ve probably got months to go before EON announces a title and proper cast, so take this report with a grain of salt. Sure, Cruz is married to Skyfall actor Javier Bardem, so it seems like a neat and convenient trick that she’d be cast in the film. But the report comes from Yahoo UK, and the UK press loves to speculate wildly about Bond casting well before any reliable info is available. The source passes on word from an unnamed source that contract details are being worked out now, but since there’s no shoot schedule at this point, and possibly not even a finished script, don’t be surprised if Bond 24 gets underway without Cruz as a Bond girl.

Sam Mendes Likely to Direct Next Two Bond Films

Sam Mendes and Judi Dench on Skyfall set

After all that chatter about Sam Mendes‘ hesitation to return for the next James Bond pic, and all that fanfare about which other filmmakers might land the job, the latest word is that Mendes is looking likely to helm the next installment after all. And possibly even the one after that. Hit the jump to get the details. Read More »

Skyfall was a smash, and naturally EON Productions, MGM and Sony want to get a new James Bond film rolling with all due speed. All the companies involved want to get their money’s worth out of Daniel Craig while they’ve got him. The Bond machine doesn’t move quickly, however, and it’s no easy task to choose the path for the new installment of a franchise that is 50 years old and almost two dozen films along.

Since Sam Mendes won’t return to make the 24th Bond film (title TBD) who might do the job? EON is talking to a variety of people now, and some of the names are being reported. Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Shane Black are all “in the mix” as possible directors. That doesn’t mean that any of them will be the person who next brings Bond to life, but it gives us something to think about.

Update: Everyone may have spoken too soon. Deadline reports that Sam Mendes is in talks to return to direct Bond 24. More below.
