‘Black Swan’ Interns Sue Over Unpaid Labor

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that unpaid internships can suck, but are they illegal? Former Black Swan interns Alex Footman and Eric Glatt think so. The two men are filing a federal lawsuit against Fox Searchlight Pictures for violating labor laws by hiring unpaid interns to do the menial work typically associated with internships — fetching coffee, taking out trash — which they argue should have been done by paid employees instead. And while some have scoffed that that Footman and Glatt shouldn’t complain about “paying their dues” as many film industry vets have before them, the law may actually be on their side. BLACK SWAN
Darren Aronofsky doesn’t want you to experience joy or happiness. He wants to devastate you. He wants to punish you as he does his characters, fully immersing you in every dreary facet of their world as it collapses around them. And he is really, really good at it. Aronofsky has always shown a fascination with the degeneration of the body and mind, finding its limits when tested against paranoia, addiction, disease and giant planks of wood covered in nails and barbed wire. It’s amusing then, that his most horrifying exercise in body horror would be a wildly operatic melodrama about ballet. In Black Swan, you are not treated as an observer to Natalie Portman’s physical and psychological torment; you are made to experience it through her. There is never a moment of rest. The more Portman strives for perfection, the more she feels as though she could break at any moment — and Aronofsky makes damn sure you feel it too. His goal, I can only imagine, was to force the audience into a perpetual state of exhaustive madness. Well, mission accomplished.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD – A “Metamorphosis: A Three-Part Series” feature. Blu-ray – Includes everything on the DVD, as well as 3 additional features (“Behind the Curtain”, “Ten Years in the Making”, “Cast Profiles – Roles of a Lifetime”).

One would think that Natalie Portman‘s Oscar for Black Swan would stop any and all discussions about the merits of her performance. It hasn’t. Last week, claims were made by Portman’s body double in the film, Sarah Lane, that only 5% of the full body shots in the film were Portman. That was in direct opposition to what Black Swan choreographer and Portman’s future husband Benjamin Millepied said. He claimed 85% of the film was Portman. Now, Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky has come out to defend his Oscar-winning actress by backing up Millepied’s claim. Read Aronofksy’s statement and more after the break. Read More »

One of the most impressive elements about Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan is Natalie Portman’s Oscar-winning performance. Not only does Portman grippingly capture the mental disintegration of her character, she also trained for months to be able to convincingly take on the role of a star ballerina. A body double for Portman was used for some scenes, but in a recent LA Times piece, Black Swan choreographer and future Portman husband Benjamin Millepied responded to the body double scuttlebutt by claiming that “85% of that movie is Natalie.”

Portman’s body double, Sarah Lane, has now publicly refuted those claims, saying that Portman’s work only accounts for 5 percent of what you see in the full-body dance scenes in Black Swan.

By now, we all know the story behind Darren Aronofsky‘s Black Swan — it and 2008′s The Wrestler were initially conceived of as a single love story, before Aronofsky realized there was too much material for one project and split it into two movies. Or maybe not. A new video reveals that Black Swan actually began life as a spin-off of The Wrestler titled The Deli Manager, with Todd Barry reprising his role from The Wrestler. And Aronofsky himself appears to confirm the tale, so it has to be true. (Funny or Die is reliable news source, right?) See for yourself after the jump.
