Whitney Houston is set to return to the big screen for the first time in 15 years for Sparkle, a remake of the 1976 drama based on the real-life tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes (yes, kind of like Dreamgirls, only Sparkle came first). The story follows the rise and fall of fictional girl group Sister & the Sisters, the members of which find their personal lives falling apart even as their act reaches ever higher levels of fame and success.
Houston, who’s also set to executive produce, will play the “not-so-encouraging” mother of the girls in the band. Houston has actually been attached to the project since back when it was supposed to star Aaliyah, who passed away in 2001. Also in the cast are Jordin Sparks making her cinematic debut in the title role, and Mike Epps in the part of destructive comedian Satin. Salim Akil (Jumping the Broom) is set to direct the feature from a script by his wife Mara Brock Akil. [Movieline]
After the jump: Dustin Hoffman snags some fine British talent (including two notable Harry Potter actors) for his directorial debut, and Twilight star Ashley Greene signs on for a weird, “ultra-modern” version of a Charles Dickens classic.

On day two of the 38th annual Telluride Film Festival and I caught the amazing new Pixar film LA Luna, Wim Wenders 3D documentary Pina about the famous modern dance choreographer, and the first surprise premiere screening of the festival, Jim Field Smith‘s dark dramedy Butter, a top Black List screenplay about a midwest butter carving championship which stars Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Olivia Wilde, Ashley Greene, Alicia Silverstone, Rob Corddry and Hugh Jackman.

We at /Film are well aware of how much you guys love Twilight news, so we try our best to keep you updated on the latest in the phenomenally popular sparkling-vampire series. To that end, we have a batch of new The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 images that have just been released via press release, just days after we posted the last set of stills. You’re welcome.
The new photos include images of Michael Sheen and Jamie Campbell Bower (a.k.a. Gellert Grindelwald from the Harry Potter series) as vampire coven leaders Aro and Caius, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) looking tough on a motorcycle, and Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) playing chess in what appears to be a Pottery Barn catalog. Mull ‘em over after the jump.

Let’s take a rare dip into the Twilight pool. The first half of the two-part series climax, Breaking Dawn, is set to be released on November 18, and Summit is starting the promo machine. A set of new photos has been released for the film, along with a big cover story in Entertainment Weekly that doesn’t tell us too much, but promises some punch to the weird, bloody end of the story. Two films got release dates today: A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas and Seth MacFarlane‘s directorial debut Ted both have spots on the calendar. But there’s a price (of sorts) as the Ashley Greene thriller The Apparition has been bumped from a fall date back to 2012. Details on all three after the break. Read More »

We haven’t talked much about the film LOL, a remake of a French comedy, because it is a Miley Cyrus picture. Not really what most of our audience is clamoring to learn about. But on this Eclipse eve, why not report that Twilight co-star Ashley Greene is joining the cast along with everyone’s favorite sorta-tough guy, Thomas Jane. (I’m not being sarcastic there — I like Jane’s work quite a bit.)
They join Cyrus and Demi Moore in a film about “a teenage girl (Cyrus) who is dumped by her more sexually experienced boyfriend (George Finn) while her divorcee mother (Moore) struggles to move on with her life.” Jane plays the father of Cyrus’ character, while Greene will be “a high school bad girl.” [THR]
After the break, new roles for Angela Bassett and Heather Graham. Read More »

I know you’ve all been on pins and needles waiting for this news, so rest easy: Summit has confirmed via press release that its adaptation of Breaking Dawn, the final Twilight novel, will be broken into two films so as to maximize profit from the soon to be completed series. Contract negotiations were the reason that it has taken so long between rumor and announcement. Bill Condon directs both films, which could lend them an air of respectability. Just an air, mind you.
All I want to know now is: which of the two films will have the craziest vampire super baby scenes?
The full press release is after the break. Read More »
