‘London Boulevard’ US Trailer

William Monahan, screenwriter of Kingdom of Heaven and Oscar-winning writer of The Departed, directed his first film back in 2009. London Boulevard opened quietly in the UK last year and is opening even more quietly in the States this fall.

The movie is an adaptation of a novel by Ken Bruen (who also wrote the books on which The Guard and Blitz were based) and stars Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley and Ray Winstone in a London-based gangster movie. Reviews haven’t been particularly good — hence the quiet opening — but the cast is top-notch and the material looks fun and difficult to resist despite the tepid reviews. Check out a new US trailer below and get a taste of the action. Read More »

Last year Maggie Carey‘s film The Hand Job was announced, in which Aubrey Plaza would play a high school graduate who decides she needs a lot more sexual experience before college, and proceeds to work her way through a checklist of, er, action items. Yesterday many more cast members were announced and today we have even more, and roles for many of them.

Connie Britton will play the main character’s “liberal, free-spirited mother,” Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat are two of her best friends; and Scott Porter will play a guy in a band that Plaza has a crush on.

Dominic Dierkes and D.C. Pierson (along with their Derrick Comedy co-member Don Glover) will play lifeguards; Bill Hader will be their stoned boss at the pool. Johnny Simmons is Plaza’s classmate and co-worker, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is his sci-fi nerd best friend. There will be a few more roles cast yet, but this is a great cast so far. And after Easy A I very much welcome more efforts to turn the typical male coming of age sex comedy into a story outline that girls can get lost in, too. [Variety]

After the break, Keira Knightley heads to TV — in a way — for the Syfy miniseries Neverland. Read More »

‘Limitless’ Trailer

The last time we heard from Neil Burger‘s new film Limitless (formerly called Dark Fields) Bradley Cooper was shilling a fake wonder drug called NZT in a slick infomercial. (And then a sample of NZT actually arrived at my house. Nope, didn’t try it.)

Now there’s a trailer for the film, in which Bradley Cooper plays a guy who is introduced to a drug that will unlock all the potential of the human mind. He becomes a powerhouse. It’s like the superhero film for stockbrokers, but there’s a real downside. Watch it after the break. Read More »

Earlier this week there was a brief bit of news that Dark Fields, the new film from Neil Burger (The Illusionist) had changed titles; the movie is now called Limitless.

Now there’s a sort of viral promo for the film. It features Bradley Cooper more or less in character as the pitchman for a wonderdrug called NZT, aka ‘the clear pill.’ The drug can reportedly solve almost every problem known to man by allowing humans to access their entire physical and mental potential. But…there are a couple of possibly troubling side effects. Just a couple. Check out the promo after the break. Read More »

LONDON BOULEVARD

Awards Daily has found the first official photo from William Monahan’s London Boulevard on ONTD. Monahan is the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Martin Scorsese’s The Departed and Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven. Boulevard is Monahan’s directorial debut.

Based on the novel by Ken Bruen, this London-based crime drama stars Colin Farrell as “a man newly released from prison who falls in love with a reclusive young movie star (played by Keira Knightley) and finds himself in a duel with a vicious gangster.”

justin-timberlake-1

There are three projects in development with the working title of Friends with Benefits, and now one of them has landed Justin Timberlake. Will Gluck is directing this one for Screen Gems, about “a headhunter [who] recruits a magazine editor and since each is too busy to find a mate, they agree to sleep together with no strings attached. Things get complicated when the guy falls for the girl, who’s dating someone else.”

For those keeping score, there’s also the Ivan Reitman film with the same title, starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, which was originally called Fuckbuddies. The third use of the title is an NBC pilot written by (500) Days of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber. The TV show could give Screen Gems some competition for the title, but somehow I don’t expect that many of you are going to be heartbroken about a name change for a new romcom. [Deadline]

After the break, we’ll check in on Winona Ryder and Anna Friel. Read More »

Tobey Maguire Will Star In Indie Film The Details

maguire_banks_raccoon

Tobey Maguire is joining the cast of The Details, an indie black comedy which seeks to address the severe shortage of raccoon infestation movies that has plagued the cinema of late. According to Variety, he’ll be husband to Elizabeth Banks, with Ray Liotta, Dennis Haysbert, Anna Friel and Laura Linney also appearing. Directing is Jacob Estes, whose credit was last seen on 2004′s decent and (now) frequently forgotten Mean Creek. Also factoring into the film: a bunch of determined raccoons. Read More »

It was a little before the half-way mark to Land of the Lost when a little kid started crying in the theater as the Sleestaks opened their reptilian beaks, revealing row after row of neat, razor-sharp teeth. We hadn’t even reached the scene in which Danny McBride’s misogynist, would-be casino maven, Will Stanton, stared directly into the camera while sitting in a swimming pool, tripping his fucking mind out on “narcotic” alien fruit-juice. The swimming pool was randomly parked on an inter-dimensional white sand desert sprinkled with a Viking ship, a broken-down Cessna, and a meta neon sign that blankly spells “Motel.” And as if exiting from Jeff Goldblum’s ear canal during a Jurassic Park hallucination, dinosaurs big and small were roaming the diverse terrain beyond. Land of the Lost is chockful of original, PG-13-hazing moments. And if you’re a parent and bring your kids to see it, you deserve a cool sticker.
