We just mentioned the fact that Beyonce will direct her own bio-doc for HBO, but there are a few other biopics in development, too. Andrew Dominik has only released two films to date: Chopper, and The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford. The former got worldwide attention, and the latter quickly developed a fervent cult following despite being a relative failure at the box office. This week Dominik releases his third film, Killing Them Softly, and with any luck, Dominik’s next film will arrive a lot sooner. Before making Killing Them Softly he was working on the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, and that film is moving forward once again, with Naomi Watts (above) still set to play Marilyn.
Dominik told The Playlist, “It’s about her whole life. It starts when she’s seven and it ends when she dies… It’s sort of a Polanski descent-into-madness-type movie. It’s about this orphan girl who gets lost in the woods.” That latter statement is interesting, especially since the film comes from Joyce Carol Oates‘ book about Marilyn, but taking the eccentricities of Killing Them Softly into account, it isn’t all that surprising. Dominik clearly has more than the mundane in mind. In fact, he says “fantasy and reality become very blurred in the story.”
Dominik hopes to shoot the film next year, and says “It’s my dream project and I’ve been working on it for years and years and years.” But let’s move on. After the break,

The first teaser trailer for A Good Day to Die Hard was a delightfully explosive bit of fun, but disappointingly, that energy doesn’t seem to have translated to the first teaser poster. Our first bit of print marketing for the action sequel tries to be striking in its simplicity, and merely ends up being bland. Doesn’t help that star Bruce Willis‘ face is so Photoshopped he’s tiptoeing right up against the border of Uncanny Valley, either.
Much more exciting are the badass new international poster for Django Unchained, and the Weinstein Co.’s latest batch of stylish onesheets for Killing Them Softly. Check ‘em all out after the jump.

I quit watching this French trailer for Andrew Dominik‘s Killing Them Softly about half way through, after I saw a couple shots in a row that I realized I would have preferred to see first in the full feature.
Take that as an endorsement, of sorts. This might show you more than you want to see, but at the same time it is a good new trailer for Dominik’s film, with a respectable amount of new footage. If you just want to see more than you have of the film that features Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer hunting down two guys (Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn) who robbed a card game, then it’ll do the trick. Briefly: With Lawless not likely to do much for The Weinstein Company in the Oscar race, the company is relying upon Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master and Andrew Dominik‘s Killing Them Softly to do much of the heavy listing when it comes to earning awards and accolades. Here’s the trailer for Andrew Dominik‘s new film, Killing Them Softly. We’ve been waiting to see more footage from this one, especially after the tease provided by the one previously released clip. The trailer shows two dumbasses (Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn) robbing a mob card game run by Ray Liotta, and how Richard Jenkins calls in a quiet enforcer, played by Brad Pitt, to track them down.
This footage looks fantastic, and I think anyone who’s been hungry to see Dominik’s long-awaited return to directing will be even more ready for the film after watching. There’s not much more to say; check it out below. Read More »
Briefly: This will put to rest any questions about Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new film The Master having a premiere (world or North American) at Fantastic Fest. Because the current report is that the film will hit theaters on a limited basis on September 14, and then begin a process of expansion the week following, on September 21. That’s right: you get to see a new PT Anderson film in six weeks.
Variety announced the film’s opening date, and notes that The Weinstein Company has also pushed Andrew Dominik‘s Killing Them Softly back to October 19. (So the two films have nearly swapped places.) This pits The Master against Finding Nemo 3D, Resident Evil: Retribution, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Liberal Arts, none of which are likely to deeply impact the presumed awards player’s opening. Dominik’s film goes up against Paranormal Activity 4, Alex Cross, Not Fade Away, and The Loneliest Planet.

Based on the strength of his two films Chopper and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, we’ve eagerly anticipated Andrew Dominik‘s new film Killing Them Softly. The movie is an adaptation of a novel by George V. Higgins and shot last year under the title Cogan’s Trade. It features Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer on the trail of two guys (Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn) who robbed a big-ticket poker game. While the plot is pretty minimal, it sounds like there’s more to the movie than just that.
We’ve seen a couple clips, and word out of Cannes was intriguing. There’s even a controversial angle, as Dominik seems to have positioned the film specifically as a rebuttal of modern capitalism. Reviews out of Cannes were slightly mixed, but the positive ones tended to be very positive (as with Jesse James) and now a sleek website has been launched, filled with new images from the thriller, to put the movie out to the masses.
