This winter brings Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to theaters. It will be the first theatrically release live-action Star Wars feature film that tells a story outside of the traditional trilogy narrative of the saga. Even though we still have months before we see that film in its entirety, the second movie in the Star Wars Story series is already in the works, and it will focus on the famous smuggler Han Solo before he became caught up with the Rebellion in Star Wars: A New Hope.
Alden Ehrenreich was previously confirmed to play Han Solo, taking the role played memorably by Harrison Ford, and just yesterday we learned that a young Lando Calrissian will be joining him at some point in the movie. Right now the hunt is on for an actor to play the scoundrel friend of Han Solo who made his debut in The Empire Strikes Back and received an expanded role in Return of the Jedi.
After the initial report surfaced, Donald Glover was said to be the frontrunner. But there’s no guarantee he’ll end up with the part when all is said and done, so we came up with a batch of 15 other possibilities for who could play young Lando Calrissian. Some of the choices are obvious, but we dug a little deeper for some of the options to come up with some lesser known names who could catch their big break like Harrison Ford did back in 1977. André Benjamin, aka André 3000 of Outkast, does a solid job of playing Jimi Hendrix in the movie Jimi: All Is By My Side. The film isn’t your typical biopic, as it veers away from providing a top to bottom account of the guitarist’s life. Instead, it focuses on the year of Hendix’s life in which he went from being an unknown supporting player to a guy on the brink of stardom.
During that year, he meets Linda Keith (Imogen Poots), who dates Keith Richards and consequently has the connections to get Jimi’s career started. The film wanders through this strange, intense year in the man’s life with an odd rhythm that gives it a unique feel. Some of that is captured in the new Jimi: All Is By My Side trailer, which you can see below. Read More »
John Ridley just had a great weekend as he won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for his work on 12 Years a Slave. Even if there is still-simmering resentment between him and the film’s director Steve McQueen, taking home that Oscar, and the film’s own Best Picture win, have to have him feeling pretty good.
Ridley has his own directorial debut coming to theaters this year. All Is By My Side chronicles an early year in the career of Jimi Hendrix, picking up where the guitarist was “discovered” in a club by Linda Keith. The film follows Hendrix as he goes to London and assembles his first major band, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and prepares to play the Monterey Pop Festival.
We haven’t seen a trailer, but below you can see a clip of one scene, in which we see Andre Benjamin as Jimi Hendrix, in a dramatic moment with Linda Keith (Imogen Poots) during a conversation before he heads to Monterey. Read More »
Briefly: The shot above hints at the first look at the Jimi Hendrix biopic, All Is By My Side, which features André Benjamin (or André 3000, if you prefer) of Outkast in the lead role. You can see the full thing below, but you’ll have to wait until at least the fall to see Benjamin bring to life the small-time guitarist Jimmy James, who transformed himself into the superstar Jimi Hendrix in the mid/late ’60s. Benjamin looks great, but how will he move? We’ll give you a trailer as soon as possible. Read More »
Just as the film All Is By My Side got rolling — that movie in which Andre Benjamin of OutKast stars as legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix — we heard from the Hendrix estate, which said that the film was moving forward without an agreement in place from those who control rights to the musician’s song catalogue.
In other words, unless something changed, the Jimi Handrix biopic would not have any Jimi Hendrix music. Nothing has changed, and now we know that the film will feature covers of songs by The Beatles, Muddy Waters, and other artists. But given the way Hendrix used to play cover sets before his explosion in popularity, that’s not such a weird or bad thing. Read More »
It seems like biopics and other similar true life stories are exploding in development right now, and we’ve got casting for three big ones. First up, the Jimi Hendrix film All is By My Side has just added a young Keith Richards. British actor Ashley Charles will play the Rolling Stones songwriter and guitarist.
John Ridley is directing the film now, with Andre Benjamin as Hendrix, and Hayley Atwell as Linda Keith, who during the story’s time frame was dating Richards. She ‘discovered’ Hendrix and tried to get the Stones management to work with him, to no avail. Keith Richards likely won’t play a big part in the film, which chronicles the days before Hendrix made it big.
Fun fact checking: let’s see how people refer to Richards in this film. In ’63 the Stones manager started listing the guitarist as Keith Richard, and it wasn’t until the ’70s that he once again became Richards. [THR]
After the break, Donal Logue plays an important figure in the New York music scene, and Colin Farrell is in talks for the Mary Poppins film Saving Mr. Banks. Read More »
The Jimi Hendrix biopic All is by My Side may not have the blessing of the Hendrix estate — or it didn’t a few weeks ago, anyway — but it is moving forward regardless. André Benjamin, member of OutKast and occasional actor, is playing Hendrix after years of talking about the possibility, and photos of the actor in costume have hit the internet.
Sure, this is basically Benjamin in an appropriate wig and a peek at the actual costume he’ll wear in one scene, but with his mustache in shape he looks more or less like Hendrix.
That’s just the beginning, however, as Jimi has an instantly recognizable stage presence and speech pattern, in addition to his eccentric guitar playing style. Can Benjamin get all that down and make the character feel like more than a put-on? We’ll see eventually. In the meantime there are a couple pics of him, as well as two of co-star Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger). She plays Linda Keith, who was dating Keith Richards when she befriended Hendrix and helped him get a record deal. Read More »
Earlier this week we passed on the rumor that All is By My Side, a long-simmering biopic of the amazing and groundbreaking guitarist/singer/songwriter Jimi Hendrix, would finally shoot this month with Andre Benjamin of OutKast in the lead role. (Benjamin has an acting resume, in films like Idlewild, Be Cool and Four Brothers.)
Now we’ve got confirmation of that report, with some new details. Haley Atwell is confirmed for a role and Imogen Poots will play in the picture, too.
But there’s a problem: while financing is set so that John Ridley, who also wrote, can direct the film in Ireland just weeks from now, Hendrix rights holders Experience Hendrix say they’re not on board with the project. Read More »

For years now, André Benjamin has been talking about playing the lead in a biopic of Jimi Hendrix‘s life. But between the Hendrix estate’s notoriously tight hold on the late musician’s work and the fact that we haven’t heard of much forward movement on the film, we couldn’t help but be skeptical.
According to a new report, however, not only is the movie in pre-production, it could shoot as early as this month under the title All is By My Side. It may be worth taking this news with a grain of salt, but if true, it’s a surprising and exciting development on a project that looked like it might never actually get off the ground.

Here are two projects that might happen, but at this point the safest approach seems to be an emphasis on ‘might.’ One is a Jimi Hendrix biopic that has been gestating for some time with André Benjamin (aka André 3000 of OutKast) playing the iconic rocker. The other is a new version of George Orwell’s classic novel Animal Farm, which could be a reunion of Rise of the Planet of the Apes talents Andy Serkis and Rupert Wyatt. Details on both are after the break. Read More »
