The last time we reported on Alfonso Cuarón‘s Gravity, which has had a hell of a time assembling a core cast, the production was reportedly in danger of losing Robert Downey, Jr. He had long been set to play a key supporting role in the film, even through the process where a series of actresses from Angelina Jolie to Natalie Portman and finally Sandra Bullock were courted for the lead.
Now he has, in fact, left the production. Read More »

Warning: this is a half-speculative story that could easily be worked out within by the end of the week, so it could amount to nothing. But it’s one more piece of the difficult mosaic that has been the development process for Gravity, the space-bound thriller from Alfonso Cuarón. After a long search, the film finally found a lead in Sandra Bullock. And it has boasted, almost since day one, one of the strongest possible supporting actors: Robert Downey, Jr. But now there’s a possibility that scheduling will knock Mr. Downey out the film’s orbit. Casting woes continue for Alfonso Cuarón‘s film Gravity. The movie, co-scripted by the director’s son Jonas, requires a strong female lead to anchor a story about a space-bound engineer who has to make her way back to an international space station in the wake of a catastrophe.
Angelina Jolie was offered the part, twice, and passed twice, and Natalie Portman was recently said to be in negotiations. Now we hear that she has said no, which leaves studio Warner Bros. turning toward Sandra Bullock.
UPDATE: Sandra Bullock is in active negotiations for the role, says THR. Read More »

One step forward. After Angelina Jolie passed twice on the role, Alfonso Cuarón decided to offer the lead role in his space-set thriller Gravity to Natalie Portman. Now the actress is reportedly in active negotiations to take the role of a woman who is trying to negotiate her way back to safety after she’s stranded in space during a routine repair mission. With the choice of lead role for Alfonso Cuarón‘s ‘Castaway in space’ film Gravity hinging to a great degree on a bankability index, it’s something of a surprise that Sandra Bullock‘s name didn’t come up as a serious first-pick choice until now. With Warner Bros. reportedly nervous about the idea of an $80m sci-fi film in which one actress is the only person on screen for much of the time, turning to Bullock seems like a no-brainer. After Angelina Jolie exited Alfonso Cuarón‘s 3D sci-fi thriller Gravity, the search for a replacement began. Last week, Latino Review learned that the producers behind the project were “interest[ed] in meeting Rachel Weisz for the role.” However, Deadline found out that Weisz was just one of the many names on the producer’s list of actresses they’ve talked to or screen tested: Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively.
Now Risky Business has learned that Natalie Portman has been offered the role, as the studio approved the actress without requiring a screen test in the wake of the early Black Swan reviews. According to the report, Portman is expected to read the latest version of the script this week and make her decision shortly.

It’s almost like someone knew that info would emerge yesterday that Angelina Jolie had declined (again) to star in Alfonso Cuarón‘s Gravity, putting the project in jeopardy. Because in a script review written just prior to that revelation, the idea of Scarlett Johansson or Blake Lively playing the central role is discussed, and roundly dismissed. “There’s no way Johansson and Lively are going to be in this movie…Everything depends on the actress playing the part of Ryan…[and] neither has anything approaching what is needed to play this part. Not in a million years.”
Take that as you will, but it is an interesting underline to the idea that Warner Bros. is reluctant to make the film without a high-caliber actress in the lead. While we wait to hear what will happen next at WB, the script review gives us a clearer picture than ever of why the movie might be a huge challenge to make, but also suggests that, if that challenge is met, if could be a very unique project. If you’ve been following along with the news about Alfonso Cuarón‘s gestating space thriller Gravity, you might be a bit confused by this headline. Angelina Jolie had been courted to star in the film, but passed on it way back in February. That has led to months of screen tests and discussions with other actresses. But Warner Bros. really wanted Jolie. Because without someone with her pull, spending $80m on an esoteric space movie with a female lead who is onscreen along for much of the time evidently seems like too much of a risk.
Now Jolie has passed again, so what will happen to the movie? Read More »
