Go Back to the Arcade in this New Adventureland Clip

I was able to score a new clip from Adventureland at the Sundance Press Center. The video clip takes place in the 80′s-era Adventureland arcade. Connell (Ryan Reynolds), an aspiring rock star and “the icon of cool to all the kids working at the park”, hits on Em (Kristen Stewart). I’ll be seeing Adventureland in a couple days at the Sundance Film Festival premiere, so check back for the early buzz on the film. Watch the new clip after the jump.

More Adventureland Video Clips

Miramax has premiered new footage from Adventureland on AICN and MySpace. Greg Mottola‘s new film premieres at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival next week, and we can’t wait to see it.  If you’ve seen the trailer that was released in November, than you pretty much know what to expect — it’s more of a damedy than a laugh-out-loud comedy (ie more Garden State than Superbad). Some people believe that it has the potential to be next year’s sleeper hit ala Little Miss Sunshine/Juno. Both clips are embedded after the jump.

Movie Trailer: Greg Mottola’s Adventureland

One of the movies I’ve been looking forward to is Superbad director Greg Mottola‘s Adventureland coming of age film based on his own experiences at the Long Island amusement park. Set in 1987, the film follows James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad forced to take a minimum wage job at an amusement park when he realizes he can’t afford his dream tour of Europe. Writer/director Greg Mottola – best known as the director of the hit comedy Superbad – channeled his own experiences as a low-paid amusement park employee while making the film.

Co-starring Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Martin Star. I hear it’s more of a damedy than a laugh-out-loud comedy (ie more Garden State than Superbad), and has the potential to be next year’s sleeper hit ala Little Miss Sunshine/Juno. The first trailer has just been released and the film looks like everything I thought it was going to be. Watch the trailer now, and please leave your comments below.

Ghostlife saw an early test screening in Boston, and had this to say about the film: “I thought it was excellent.” …”The acting and screenplay were great, but also thought the direction was fabulous. There was a slight ethereal quality to it that added a lot of atmosphere. The 80s aspect was also not overdone as I feared, it complimented everything just right. As it started I didnt know where it was going to go, it felt like it might be a directionless screwball comedy, but it turned out to be what I thought was a beautiful movie. Great character, acting, a tinge of weirdness. Unique stuff, well done!”

Watch the trailer now in High Defintiion on MySpace. Adventureland is now set for a Spring 2009 (possibly March 27th?) release.

Behind the Scenes of Adventureland

As you probably already know, Superbad director Greg Mottola is in post production on a film based on his own experiences at the Long Island amusement park. Adventureland is a period comedy film set in the 1980′s which follows a college graduate, played by Jesse Eisenberg, who was prepared to spend his summer in Europe but when his father is laid off, he is now stuck at home and forced to get a job at a local amusement park called Adventureland, where comedy ensures and love blossoms.

I hear it’s more of a damedy than a laugh-out-loud comedy (ie more Garden State than Superbad), and has the potential to be next year’s sleeper hit ala Little Miss Sunshine/Juno. I just came across this six and a half minute WQED behind the scenes piece on the making of the film, which might be wroth checking out.

The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters in August 2008, but I’m now hearing March 2009 (again, unconfirmed). It defintiely will help that Twilight star Kristen Stewart plays the romantic lead in Mottola’s film. I hear they screened in back in March in New York City, and the crowds doidn’t take well to an “abrupt ending”.

Ryan Reynolds in Adventureland

Ryan Reynolds in The Nines

Ryan Reynolds has been cast in SuperBad director Greg Mottola’s next film Adventureland, which features The Squid and the Whale star Jesse Eisenberg as a college graduate in the summer of 1987, who was prepared to spend his vacation in Europe before starting Grad School. But when his father is laid off, he is now stuck at his home in Long Island, NY. He is forced to bet a job at a local amusement park called Adventureland where comedy ensures and love blossoms. The story is based off Mottola’s own experiences at the Long Island amusement park, Adventureland. Reynolds will play Connell, an aspiring rock star and “the icon of cool to all the kids working at the park,” according to Variety.

I’ve always been a fan of Ryan Reynold’s comedy. I’ve always found his comic vibe to be very similar to Jason Lee. But Reynolds seems to only attach himself to movies that bomb. And it’s not for a lack of trying. He’s been involved in some fun projects like Van Wilder, Harold and Kumar, Waiting…, Smokin’ Aces and John August’s The Nines.  I hope that eventually America wakes up to Reynolds like they did Lee.

Filming is set to begin this October in Pittsburgh.

Greg Mottola

The Squid and the Whale star Jesse Eisenberg is set to star in SuperBad director Greg Mottola’s next film Adventureland.

“I play a lot of directors’ awkward stages in their lives,” Eisenberg revealed to MTV, adding that the comedy won’t be nearly as broad as “Superbad.” “It’s probably closer [in tone] to ‘The Daytrippers.’”

Eisenberg is one of the better young actors working today. If you haven’t seen him in The Squid and the Whale or Roger Dodger, please add those movies to your netflix list now. I just recently caught him in The Hunting Party, which was also very enjoyable.

Adventureland

Breaking News: Judd Apatow didn’t direct SuperBad. That’s right, he was only the producer. I feel like everyone including the studio were trying to keep this fact secret. And it makes sense, Judd Apatow is now the new hot name brand in comedy movies (does anyone remember this is the same guy who once produced and wrote Heavy Weights and Celtic Pride? IMDb never forgets!). Greg Mottola is actually the guy who made the film (he also made The Daytrippers in 1996 and the failed Apatow Fox series Undeclared). So now that he’s made a successful film, everyone wants to know – what is he doing next? (Okay, everyone doesn’t want to know, because most people still think he’s Judd Apatow, but we’re trying to correct that people!)

JoBlo has the exclusive news that Mottola has signed on to direct Adventureland, a period comedy film set in the 1980′s which follows a college graduate who was prepared to spend his summer in Europe before starting Grad School. But when his father is laid off, he is now stuck at his home in Long Island, NY. He is forced to bet a job at a local amusement park called Adventureland “where comedy abounds and he falls in love.”

When I was a kid, we had an amusement park very close to my home (it’s now actually a Six Flags). So every year I would visit the park more than a few times (especially as I became older in age). I always thought that working at an amusement park must lead to some interesting stories. Sure, it’s probably a crappy minimum wage job, but those are usually the jobs that result in the best tales (I know I have quite a few from my adventures working at a convenience store).  And I can only imagine the type of fun that could have ensued in a huge theme park with tons of other teenage workers.

The film is apparently based on Mottola’s own experiences at Long Island’s actual Adventureland. Filming is set to begin this October in Pittsburgh. I’m now very interested. I wonder if Disney will contest the title?
