Two questions inevitably crop up as a movie based on a true story unfolds. First, how much of what’s happening on screen is actually what happened in real life? Second, how much of what happened in real life can translate into something dramatically interesting? The new war film 12 Strong begins with a compelling enough hook, following a dozen U.S. soldiers who were the first men to attempt to take down the Taliban in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Unfortunately, while the real events indeed seem fascinating, they don’t make for a compelling film.

In the 12 Strong trailer, one of the things the soldiers carries into the hunt for the Taliban is a piece of rubble from the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. “This is from the towers. You carry that with you,” William Fichtner’s Colonel Mulholland solemnly declares as he hands the small piece to Chris Hemsworth‘s Captain Mitch Nelson.

And with that, Nelson and his U.S. Special Forces team are given “a reason why” they’re fighting the good fight, engaging in a mission to track down Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists in Afghanistan.

12 Strong Trailer

Warner Bros. Pictures has a new war drama called 12: Strong: The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers coming to theaters in January of 2018. Formerly known as Horse Soldiers, the film follows a team of U.S. Special Forces soldiers sent into Afghanistan almost immediately after the attacks of 9/11 on a mission to track down a network of terrorists. But in order to get the job done, they must form a surprising alliance during a difficult time, one that is more relevant than ever during today’s times of political and cultural strife.

On February 7, 2017, /Film was invited to visit the set of 12 Strong during production in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We talked to stars Chris Hemsworth, Michael Pena, Trevante Rhodes and Navid Negahban about their work on the movie, which included riding horses into battle on a small mountainside while flaming debris and gunfire surrounded them. Though fans are gearing up to see Chris Hemsworth take on Hulk in the upcoming Marvel Studios sequel Thor: Ragnarok, he’ll be taking on a much more realistic threat in an upcoming war drama arriving early in 2018.

12 Strong, formerly known as Horse Soldiers, finds Chris Hemsworth as part of a U.S. Special Forces team tasked with being sent into Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9/11 on a mission to track down the terrorists who were behind the ruthless attacks on the United States in 2001. In order to effectively track down the Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists, they must align themselves with local Afghani soldiers, even though that means being outgunned and outnumbered.
