Stop-Motion LEGO Ghostbusters

Pretty much everyone knows there’s a new Ghostbusters movie coming to theaters this summer. The jury is out as to whether or nor director Paul Feig can deliver an entertaining update of the 1984 classic, this time with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones in the lead roles (meet all the ladies right here). We’ll find out in about a month whether this will be the successful start of a new franchise. Until then, we have another Ghostbusters project for you to feast your eyes on.

Animators and LEGO master builders from Digital Wizardz this cute and extremely impressive stop-motion LEGO Ghostbusters short film, bringing some of the more iconic scenes from the film to life in brick form. In addition, there are actually some pretty amusing gags and nods to other properties like Star Wars, A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Simpsons.

Digital Wizardz made this short just for the hell of it, which is all the more impressive because it took them a total of 2,000 hours to build, light, animate and edit the video you see above (though plenty of the sets were probably already built before the film was even in the works). The opening shot itself took 12 hours to set up and 6 hours to animate.

All the LEGO work you see on display adds up to $100,000 worth of LEGO bricks, including five of the most valuable LEGO sets produced (Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Cafe Corner, Green Grocer and Mr. Gold). As for the Stay Puft marshmallow man, he’s played by creator Paul Hollingsworth’s 10-year old daughter Hailee.
