VOTD: 'Scott Pilgrim Vs The World' Movie Vs The Book: What Are The Differences?

When you look at how director Edgar Wright presented Scott Pilgrim vs the World for the big screen, you would think that the film adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel series would be pretty loyal to the source material. For the most part, that's true. But since the screenplay by Michael Bacall went into development shortly after the release of the first volume in the book series, there was a time when the books were being released while the screenplay was being written.

Beyond that, since films rarely are able to directly translate a book to the big screen, there are plenty of differences between the Scott Pilgrim vs the World movie and the books that inspired it. Thankfully, a new video essay runs through all the Scott Pilgrim book differences, and you can watch it below.

Here's the Scott Pilgrim vs the World edition of What's the Difference? from CineFix:

While the primary story is the same in the movie as it is in the book, with Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) trying to win the affections of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and having to fight her seven evil ex-boyfriends, there are plenty of subplots that were left out of the script. That's mostly because Edgar Wright condenses the story into the span of a week, whereas the book plays out over a year. That means there just isn't time for things like Sex Bob-Omb recording an album, Scott actually having a job and a family, and much more.

But perhaps the biggest differences is in the ending of the movie, because the screenplay was finished before the last book in the series was completed. If you've never read the books before, I wholly recommend giving them a look, especially since thereĀ areĀ some awesome new color editions available for purchase.
