Russo Brothers Offer Major Updates On Captain America 3: Title Tease, Filming Start, New Characters

Here's where we are in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Guardians of the Galaxy is a massive hit. Avengers: Age of Ultron is out next, but that's not for another eight months. Ant-Man hits two months after that and is now filming. Once that is out, we'll have to wait almost a full year for the following Marvel movie, Captain America 3.

Anthony and Joe Russo are coming back to helm that film, which opens May 6, 2016, and have already told us some things about it. We know they consider it the continuation of The Winter Soldier, which hits Blu-ray next month. We know Chris Evans will be back as Cap, along with Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier and Anthony Mackie as Falcon. We assume Frank Grillo will be back as Crossbones and that whatever happens to those characters in Avengers: Age of Ultron will be reflected in Cap 3.

Now we've learned some more. The first draft by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely is in, and production will start April 2015 in Atlanta, GA. They've also teased when we might hear the full Captain America 3 title, who else could be returning, what new characters might be introduced and more. If you're looking forward to Captain America 3, you've gotta read below.

The above and below info came from pieces on Collider and Movies.com.

As for simple logistics, the Russos said they've been working on the script with the writers since before The Winter Soldier hit and they just got a "great first draft." It's gone through some changes but the guys wouldn't get into specifics. Our first real hint at what might happen in the film will be the reveal of the Captain America 3 title. Of that, the Russos said:

It will be soon. Look, sometimes the announcement waits on certain business deals to be completed so we're just kind of waiting on the business end of the issue to sort of settle itself and we'll be ready to announce it.  But we're hoping in a month or so at the most.

Let's be honest, even when we get the title it probably won't reveal the biggest things fans want to know before entering the theater. That's which new heroes or villains will be introduced in the film.

On that first point, the Russos wouldn't say anything specific but did offer this:

I can't divulge who is going to be in the film, but I think fans are going to freak out when they hear about it.

That doesn't necessarily mean Hawkeye, though, as we'd heard earlier this week. Though Jeremy Renner teased he might be in the film, the directors said the actor might just be thinking of the last film because he was supposed to be in it. Unfortunately schedules didn't work out:

There were iterations of Cap 2 that had Hawkeye and Widow in it, there was an iteration that had just Widow in it and there was an iteration that had nobody in it. You explore all of those iterations until you settle on what you think is the most potent or most powerful. And sometimes scheduling issues assist in that decision making process.

That could be a lie but it's a good cover nonetheless.

They also wouldn't confirm if Frank Grillo's Crossbones was returning but Joe did say this:

I mean, listen, we didn't – he's not alive at the end of Winter Solider for no reason, so let's just say that.  But, you know, strict Marvel policy of nondisclosure.

So if he's back, how does Bucky fit in? Well, it's going to be a deeper psychological connection this time. Here's Anthony:

The relationship between Cap and the Winter Soldier was never resolved at the end of the last movie. Thinking about where that relationship can go is a piece of the puzzle for us for sure. That character is a wonderfully, beautifully tragic figure in the sense of is he the world's most feared assassin or is he the world's longest serving POW. Is he innocent by reason of insanity or the equivalent of it because he's been mind controlled or is he irredeemable? Is he ever going to be acceptable to Cap again as the friend that he used to be before he was the Winter Soldier? These are very philosophical, emotional questions that pique our interest and definitely form one layer of the next movie.

"One layer" of the next movie. Very interesting.
