Reactions To 'Captain America 2' Could Guide Direction Of 'Captain America 3'

Considering the ecstatic early buzz surrounding Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it's no wonder Marvel is eager for more of the same. The studio re-hired Cap 2 helmers Joe and Anthony Russo to direct Captain America 3 all the way back in January, and the pair are now hard at work on the story. Among their inspirations for the new film? Fan reactions to Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

In a new interview, the directors talked about how the response to Captain America: The Winter Soldier could guide the direction of Captain America 3. Hit the jump to read their comments.

Well now that Kevin [Feige] said it that means we can talk about it, I guess. That's great. We're just in the formative stages of it right now. We just started breaking story with [screenwriters Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely and we're just getting an idea of what we wanna do with it. It's crazy working on it before the movie even comes out because you want to see what people respond to in the movie. You want to get some inspiration from what people like about the film so you go, 'Okay, this is what we gotta lean into in the next movie' or 'this is what we should move away from, this didn't work so well.' So we're just in that phase of breaking story but waiting to see how people respond to the movie.

It seems wise of the Russos to hear out the fans of Cap 2; after all, they'll be the ones shelling out for tickets to Cap 3. On the other hand, though, let's hope that influence doesn't go too far. There's listening to fans, and then there's slavishly kowtowing to fan opinion. Nothing good will come of the latter. The Russos' first Captain America movie is, by all accounts, a success. We hope they'll trust those same instincts to make Cap 3 a hit as well.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4. No release date has been announced for Captain America: Whatever the Subtitle Ends Up Being but it'll likely be in 2016 or 2017 as part of Phase 3.Discuss: In the interest of helping the Russo brothers out (not that they're reading this, but... who knows?), what lessons do you think they should take away from Cap 2?
