Obi-Wan Kenobi Spin-Off

Since the fall of 2014, there have been rumblings of Obi-Wan Kenobi getting his own standalone spin-off. In fact, those rumors even expanded to mention that a trilogy focusing on one of the last remaining Jedi was in the works at Lucasfilm with Ewan McGregor reprising his role from the prequel trilogy. We’ve yet to get any confirmation on this development, but now a fanmade trailer for Kenobi: A Star Wars Story makes the strong case for how interesting this kind of spin-off could be.

If you’re wondering why Ewan McGregor looks more like Jesus Christ than Obi-Wan Kenobi, that’s because most of the footage used comes from the movie Last Days in the Desert, where McGregor played Jesus. Even though his hair is a bit long, there’s an argument to be made for Obi-Wan letting himself go a bit once he’s in exile. The flashes of Padme dying in child birth and Anakin burning and angry on Mustafar show that he just get over these traumatic moments that he was an integral part of.

What I like most about this trailer is how character-centric the teaser is, essentially selling a small, intimate story following Obi-Wan as he is stuck on Tatooine, keeping an eye on Luke Skywalker from a distance. Sure, that Qui-Gon Jinn spirit is a little wonky, but the idea of him being counseled by his former master while in exile is still an interesting prospect.

Ewan McGregor has already said that he would like to do an Obi-Wan movie set between Episode III and IV:

I’d very much like to do one too. I think the story between Episode III and Episode IV, I think there’s a story there. I think that’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one. The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec’s Obi-Wan Kenobi because there’s a—I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be twenty or thirty years.

Only time will tell if this is a story that we get to see unfold on the big screen or not.
