love simon trailer

Teen romance movies are a dime a dozen, but Love, Simon has the benefit of being a major teen romance film revolving around a gay character. Sure, plenty of indie films and prestige flicks have explored the heartache of young gay love or the excruciating fear of coming out, but have any of them done it to an upbeat pop soundtrack? Not many.

Yes, the movie looks cheesy as hell, and yes the stars are as generically attractive as the ones you’ll find in any schlocky teen romance film — star Nick Robinson did first stretch his teen romance acting chops in 2017’s tearjerker Everything, Everything — but it’s still gives the spotlight to a gay lead in a major motion picture. And that’s huge.

Love Simon Trailer

The new Love, Simon trailer improves remarkably thanks to the Bleacher’s Jack Antonoff‘s soaring theme song, “Alfie’s Song (Not A Typical Love Song).” Until now, the marketing has veered dangerously close to being cloyingly sweet, but the new trailer is surprisingly wry and funny, contrasting Simon’s (Robinson) internal sexual identity struggle with his sweet relationships with his close-knit group of friends and his family.

And, because this is a teen movie from a major Hollywood studio, Love, Simon comes equipped with its very own pop soundtrack, now available for pre-order. Here is the track list:

  1. Alfie’s Song (Not So Typical Love Song) Bleachers
  2. Rollercoaster Bleachers
  3. Never Fall In Love Jack Antonoff & MØ
  4.  Strawberries & Cigarettes Troye Sivan
  5. Sink In Amy Shark
  6. Love Lies Khalid & Normani
  7. The Oogum Boogum Song Brenton Wood
  8. Love Me The 1975
  9. I Wanna Dance With Somebody Whitney Houston
  10. Someday At Christmas Jackson 5
  11. Wings Haerts
  12. Keeping A Secret Bleachers
  13. Wild Heart Bleachers

Based loosely on on Becky Albertalli’s novel Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, Love, Simon is directed by Greg Berlanti — now mostly known for spearheading the admirably progressive DC TV shows like Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl — and written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us). The film also stars Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Miles Heizer, Keiynan Lonsdale, Logan Miller, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, and Tony Hale.

Here is the official synopsis for Love, Simon:

Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing.

Love, Simon is set to hit theaters on March 16, 2018.
