Any Star Wars fan can tell you that even though plenty of people don’t like the prequels, the worst thing to come out of the sci-fi saga is undoubtedly the Star Wars Holiday Special. The feature length holiday movie finds Han Solo (Harrison Ford) trying to get Chewbacca back to visit his family on his home planet Kashyyyk, just in time for some kind of celebration called Life Day. It’s downright goofy and terrible, but you’ll have some real hearty laughs if you watch it, if only out of disbelief.
Now with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens arriving just in time for the holidays, the sequel is getting its own holiday special, put together with the limited knowledge we have of the characters and story. It’s just as stupid as the original holiday special, but since it’s done intentionally, that makes it far more entertaining.
Here’s the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Holiday Special from Funny or Die:
As you can see, this time it’s BB-8 anxious to get home for a holiday called Droid Day, just so he can see the assortment of droid family who are waiting for him. And for some reason, it’s Kylo Ren accompanying him. But Captain Phasma is on the hunt for BB-8, simply because the droid is so universally loved, she believes he can inspire the First Order when they need it the most.
Apparently the audience speaks bleeps and bloops, because they do all the right cues when BB-8’s wife QT-Pi (complete with a big ol’ eyelash) and the tiny Lil-8 are sharing some dialogue. Thankfully, not all the droids speak in mostly indiscernible sounds. Keith David provides his voice to Sqwee-ZL45, a droid who is getting his drink on at a bar tended by none other than Jason Alexander.
But the real showstopper is having the real band Train come by and do an original Droid Day song. Seriously, the entire band appears and then they end up taking off in space in their own train. And again, allow me to stress how this is exactly how terrible the original Star Wars Holiday Special is. And if you need to see it for yourself, you can watch it right here.
All the key cast members from the movie, including Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker and James Earl Jones, are back. And the special also includes the debut of Boba Fett, albeit in animated form, and looking much different than the character we see in The Empire Strikes Back. It’s just ridiculous.
