Latest 'Pacific Rim' Trailer Has Big Action, Lots Of Mythology

The concept of Pacific Rim seems like the simplest thing ever. Humans pilot giant robots to battle giant alien monsters. However, Warner Bros. is dead set on letting audiences know there's much more to it than that. In the latest trailer for the Guillermo del Toro sci-fi action film, the focus is squarely on the history and mythology created for the film. (With plenty of new shots of massive destruction and fighting along the way.)

Here's the new trailer for Pacific Rim.

Del Toro premiered this trailer at the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Film Festival over the weekend and said the following about the film:

If I showed you all the money shots [in Pacific Rim], you'd have a 70 minute orgasm.

What I find intriguing and encouraging about this trailer is while there are plenty of those moments, its also shows a real care for this world. Del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have obviously gone deep when it comes to how and why the humans developed the Jaegers as well as conceived them as more than just mindless robots. They're connected to their pilots. It all points to a film that, we hope, delivers on all levels.

Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff, Pacific Rim opens July 12.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
