kevin tong's ran print variant header

We’ve been covering Kevin Tong‘s art for seven years now. You might remember his work on Gallery1988’s Lost show, or his amazing R2-D2 deconstructed poster for Mondo, his stunning Iron Giant print for MMM, his Breaking Bad infographic print which could be seen on the wall in Talking Bad, or more recently his work on Warcraft and Rocketeer. Hostly, there is just too much great artwork to mention. Our coverage of his pop culture work alone spans 4 pages worth of posts.

We’ve excited to exclusively premiere Kevin Tong’s latest poster print for Akira Kurosawa‘s RAN. See Kevin Tong’s RAN print, a variant, and learn where you can find this beauty, after the jump.

Kevin Tong’s RAN Print

Kevin gave us a little background on this piece:

Akira Kurosawa one of the greatest directors that ever lived. His films have set and will continue to set the standard for films. So many movies pay homage to his groundbreaking films and RAN is among his best work. When I was asked to do the RAN poster, it was very intimidating. The film covers many themes, but I chose to stick with the central theme, chaos, which is what RAN translates to. From the moment Saburo breaks the three arrows, chaos rapidly descends upon the empire, the people, and especially Lord Ichimoni, who watches like a ghost as the kingdom he conquered through fear and cruelty tears itself apart from within. The themes of nature always seemed to communicate both emptiness and divine retribution for a life of wanton terror in the pursuit of power. All in all, the poster visually depicts my take away from the sheer awe of RAN.

Kevin Tong’s poster for Akira Kurosawa’s RAN is an official poster printed through Black Dragon Press. The screen print is printed on 24 x 36 inch paper in an edition of 140 for the regular version (on sale for $60), and 60 for the color variant with Japanese lettering (sold for $90). Both prints will be first available at The Kevin Tong illustration booth at Mondocon, which runs October 22-23, 2016. After Mondocon, Black Dragon Press will have an online drop, more details about that will be sent out in their newsletter.
