IMDB’s Top 10 Television Shows of 2016

IMDB Top Shows

With the year about to come to a close, IMDb decided it was time to add up the page views and see which shows their active users are most interested in. A lot of the site’s favorites are the usual suspects, although there is a surprise or two. Game of Thrones, of course, made the cut and claimed the no. 1 spot again.

Below, check out the IMDB top 10 television shows.

For the past five years, Game of Thrones has earned the top spot on IMDB’s list, which is based solely on the page views of IMDB’s 250 million monthly unique visitors. Here are the 10 most popular shows on the Internet Movie Database:

  1. Game of Thrones
  2. Stranger Things
  3. The Walking Dead
  4. Westworld
  5. American Horror Story
  6. The Flash
  7. Mr. Robot
  8. Orange Is the New Black
  9. Vikings
  10. Daredevil

Another non-shocker? Stranger Things taking the no. 2 spot. Considering the enthusiastic response to season one of Netflix’s hit sci-fi series, especially online, that’s expected. A mild surprise is Mr. Robot. Season two of the USA drama was somewhat divisive, which is maybe why it’s not ranked as high as season one was last year.

In a press release, IMDB’s Senior Film Editor, Keith Simanton, commented on the popularity of Game of Thrones and Stranger Things among their users:

For the fifth consecutive year, HBO’s Game of Thrones claimed the #1 spot on IMDb’s list of Top 10 TV Shows of the year. Game of Thrones has demonstrated unparalleled and enduring popularity over the last five years. Not surprisingly, its lead actors are beloved as well. Emilia Clarke for example, is IMDb’s #2 Top Star of 2016, a spot she also occupied in 2015.

But our year-end list is obviously not just about longevity. Our #2 spot is occupied by Netflix’s Stranger Things, whose 8 episodes dropped in July 2016, becoming an immediate hit with our users. The show not only served up a heap of ’80s nostalgia and reintroduced Winona Ryder to a new generation of streaming fans, but also fueled the popularity of two actresses on IMDb’s list of Top 10 Breakout Stars of 2016: Millie Bobby Brown (at #1) and Natalia Dyer (#4). Brown was so popular that she not only made it onto our Breakout Stars list, but she also charted at #3 on our Top 10 Stars of the 2016 list. Stranger Things was one of only two freshman series to rank on our Top 10 list this year; the other was HBO’s enormously popular sci-fi Westworld (#4).

Three of last year’s most popular shows on IMDb not present on this year’s list are Fear the Walking DeadArrow, and NarcosSense8Jessica Jones, and the wonderful Master of None were also some of IMDb’s most popular new shows last year, but unfortunately, none of them returned for second seasons this year, although there is a Sense8 Christmas special coming up.
