Naomi Watts could be looking at her third Oscar nomination if Entertainment One has anything to say about it. The company has picked up U.S. distribution rights for Diana (formerly titled Caught in Flight), a biopic about Princess Diana’s (Watts) private love affair with a Pakistani heart surgeon (Lost‘s Naveen Andrews).
Olivier Hirschbiegel (Downfall) directed the film from a script by Steven Jeffreys and the deal went down at Cannes. That’s the first official look at the actress above and you can read more below.
Deadline broke the news of the deal, revealing the company plans on releasing the film in the Fall for an Oscar run. Here’s what Dylan Wiley, the VP of Theatrical Marketing and Distribution for eOne said about the deal:
We are thrilled to be bringing Diana home from Cannes. Diana will give audiences worldwide a chance to not only fall in love with the Princess all over again, but also discover a part of her life up until now kept out of the public eye. And only Naomi Watts could bring such a modern icon to life, through a truly beautiful and nuanced performance.
The popularity, mystique and legend of Princess Diana, coupled with this scandalous, secret love story that took place over several years before her death, should make this a film a lot of people will be looking forward to. Are you among that group?
