Hercules trailer

January’s The Legend of Hercules failed to impress much of anyone when it opened this January. Fortunately for fans of the Greek hero, he gets a second opportunity to make an impression with this summer’s Hercules, directed by Brett Ratner.

Dwayne Johnson plays the title character, here a damaged soul haunted by an incident in his past. He’s called upon to save the world from mythological creatures, or something. The important thing is that the plot gives Johnson plenty of opportunities to wear next to nothing and flex his fearsome muscles. Watch the new full-length Hercules trailer after the jump.

IGN posted the Hercules trailer.

Nothing about Hercules looks subtle. It has the hero spout lines like “I only want to be a husband and a father” and “I am no hero” and “I! Am! HERCULES!” to save the filmmakers the trouble of showing instead of telling, and to save us the trouble of paying attention. But who needs subtlety when we have Johnson, in all his musclebound glory, going head-to-head with the Nemean lion, the gigantic boar, the Hydra (not to be confused with the MCU’s HYDRA), and the descendants of Hades?

Hercules opens July 25. John Hurt, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, and Peter Mullan star.

Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend…

Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.
