The Hangover is one of the success stories of 2009, an example of a fortuitous convergence of circumstance and luck that produced a money-making hit. With a budget of $35 million, the movie went on to gross over $270 million domestically. It’s also seeped into the popular consciousness in a big way. I was just at Target yesterday when I heard a middle-aged woman ask the clerk for the “unrated” version of The Hangover DVD.
“This is the unrated version,” he responded.
“Are you sure? Because if you’re not, it will ruin Christmas.”
The sequel is already in the works and we heard a few weeks ago that Hangover 2 would probably involve moving the three main characters into another location entirely. Now, CHUD has gotten wind of where the new film might take place: Thailand.
I will admit that I am slightly wary at the sequel. If they try to replicate the I-just-woke-up-and-I-have-no-idea-what-just-happened dynamic of the first film, it might mean the film will run the risk of being too referential (See Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest for a terrible example of this). And setting the film in Thailand, which I’m sure is ripe with the possibility for some pretty hilarious sexual humor, may mean we’ll be seeing a lot of xenophobic jokes, which will probably make me laugh but hurt my soul. But who knows, maybe Phillips will use this opportunity to make a film that subtly comments on race relations in American and abroad. Right?
Despite my qualms, I’m excited for the possibility of Helms, Galifianakis and Cooper returning to the big screen together, if only because we might get to see something like this happen again:
Devin at CHUD also mentions that according to his sources, Thailand was going to be the setting of the Old School sequel. Todd Phillips directed both Old School and Hangover, although Old School Dos is basically dead at this point. Thus, it’s possible that Phillips will re-use some of the never-seen concepts and jokes from the planned film.Cool Posts From Around the Web:
