'Game Of Thrones' Season 7 Images Feature Scheming And Scowling And A Big 'Ol Dragon

A few months ago, we heard that the dragons in Game of Thrones season 7 would be the size of 747 jet airliners. Now, a batch of images from the penultimate season of HBO's flagship series have revealed the dragons and they don't appear to be quite as big as 747s. However, they're still big enough to stomp an entire army into red goo and burn their remains into a fine ash, so let's not get too caught up on the little details.

This photo is one of several Game of Thrones season 7 images to arrive today and the others show off the other corners of Westeros: snow, scheming, and scowling. The usual.

The images arrived via Entertainment Weekly and they're entirely free of context, so let's take a look and see what we can pry loose for closer examination.

The pictures are a mixture of stills from the show and behind-the-scenes shots and they're easily distinguishable from one another because the behind-the-scenes shots feature Brienne of Tarth (played by Gwendoline Christie) actually smiling and not looking totally miserable. There are also things like cameras and lighting equipment, but it's that grin that really gives it away. These shots also help serve as a reminder of where everyone was or where they were going when season 6 came to a close.

It looks like Brienne will find herself back in the north, alongside Team Stark and Tormund, who has made it very clear to the lady knight that he's, uh, interested. Also still hanging around the north: Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish, who's still getting uncomfortably close to Sansa. And yes, Jon Snow (or is it Jon Stark now?) still looks as cold and humorless as ever. But hey, it wouldn't be Jon Snow unless he looked like death warmed over just a bit.

But really, this particular batch of images is all about the dragon. As you can tell from his dark color, that's Drogon, the largest and fiercest of Daenerys' children. It's not clear where this engagement is taking place, but it's clear that the Mother of Dragons (commanding the field from the back of Drogon himself) has the upper hand by default. Since season 6 ended with promises of a three-way war between House Lannister, House Stark, and House Targaryen, this image makes me wonder which of them will rush to ally with Dany first...or if anyone will team up to bring her down.

Game of Thrones season 7 will premiere on July 16, 2017.
