The latest Game of Thrones season 6 trailer is so full of goodness that it doesn’t need much of an introduction. You should know by now whether or not you think this show is one of the most compelling programs in the history of the television medium and are eagerly awaiting the new season or if you simply don’t like good things. It’s okay if you’re in the latter camp. The rest of us can just enjoy this trailer and the many, many promising things within.
First of all, here’s the trailer. If you’re the kind of person who can’t get enough of Westeros and Essos and love to entangle yourself in the increasingly messy and bloody webs connecting them, you’re going to want to watch this a few times. Maybe you’ll want to go through it frame-by-frame. There’s a lot to take in here.
Let’s run down the basics, shall we? There’s a lot to talk about here. Potentially spoilerly speculation follows!
First: the trailer is still trying to tell us that Jon Snow is dead. Which he is. He’s totally dead. Dead as a doornail. As dead as many other Starks. But he’s coming back. C’mon. Who else could be leading that army against Ramsay Bolton’s forces in the massive battle glimpsed throughout this footage?
Second: we finally get a proper glimpse of what Arya is up to and it certainly looks like she’s still hanging out at assassin school with Jaqen H’ghar. Her storyline is so far beyond the books at this point that I can’t even wager a guess about what she’s up to. And that’s…actually pretty exciting?
Third: Sansa is free of the Boltons and running around the North and saying vengeful things about House Frey (complete with a flashback to the Red Wedding). I’ve been wondering if the show would give poor Sansa all of the material that was reserved for the cut-from-the-show Lady Stoneheart and it’s starting to look more than a little likely.
Fourth: Jamie Lannister is not taking the High Sparrow’s war against his family lying down. This is also completely new material, so I have no idea just how ugly it’ll get. But it’s going to get ugly.
Fifth: So many White Walkers! Glimpses of the Three-Eyed Raven! A flashback to the battle at the base of the Tower of Joy! Seriously, this season is bringing out all of the craziness and all of the deep cuts.
Sixth: Jorah’s greyscale is spreading. Tyrion meets the dragons. Daenerys is…not in a good place. Essos is looking more intriguing than ever this season and that’s before we get to Varys (a.k.a. the best character on the show) being present there.
