The Future 'Solo' Films: Ron Howard Teases More For L3-37, Qi'ra, Lando And More

Solo acts as a fantastic standalone adventure movie, one that truly lives up to its A Star Wars Story subtitle. But fans couldn't help noticing that the film left a few open threads. This is only the beginning of the beloved scoundrel's journey, and Solo could very well be a launching pad for a whole new series.Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard divulged whether he planted the seeds for potential Solo sequels and whether we could get that Lando Calrissian spin-off we've all been clamoring for.Spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story follows.solo box office

Are Solo Sequels Possible?

Although it seems clear that Solo is setting the groundwork for a new series, Howard clarified to Empire Magazine that there is "no concrete plan" for another Han Solo film. Yet.

"It's been kind of a constant process of asking the questions – how might this have happened? How might have Han Solo been affected? What are the events that might have shaped his life? I think it does continue to beg questions. The fans seem enthusiastic, and so maybe there's going to be interest in exploring those."

So what could future films explore? Han meeting the big-shot gangster Jabba the Hutt, most likely, since that is where Han hints he would go next. Howard also pondered further fleshing out the world of the seedy crime Syndicates operating at this time in the Star Wars universe — of which Crimson Dawn is only one of five.

"Potentially one would think it might be kind of interesting to see what a war amongst the Syndicates looks like. There's nothing concrete there, but that's interesting territory. In what movie and through which character's perspective that might emerge... I think everybody feels like that's rich territory to explore in the movie universe."

What About a Lando Movie?

Donald Glover was the film's standout as the charming smuggler Lando Calrissian, so much so that fans immediately demanded a Lando movie. Howard doesn't have anything more concrete to add to those reports, but admitted:

"He's so entertaining, that's a real possibility. All of this is in discussion, but it all depends on project-by-project development."

Based on interest from Lucasfilm, a Lando movie seems like a real possibility. And Glover already has ideas!

Is L3-37 Gone For Good?

Not exactly. The outspoke droid was another scene-stealer in Solo but had perhaps one of the most tragic endings — one that was immediately brushed off. After L3's droid body gets destroyed, the team uploads her navigation system into the Millennium Falcon — which Lando then loses to Han in a game of Sabacc. The movie doesn't acknowledge that L3's consciousness is now likely stuck for eternity in the Millennium Falcon, and separated from the love of her life, Lando. But that may not be the case, Howard says.

"Is there some way that Lando could rebuild L3? One would hope, wouldn't yoy. Maybe the Falcon gets to keep a bit of that super-intelligence but Lando could maybe, somehow, someday find his way to reconstructing L3."

That sounds better than the Black Mirror-tinged alternative.

The Qi'ra Question

Qi'ra's actions at the end of the film are purposefully ambiguous, but Howard has his own reading. When Qi'ra chooses to stay with Crimson Dawn and become Maul's second-in-command rather than running away with Han, Howard sees it not as a moment of betrayal but of charity."In my mind, she knew she couldn't run off with Han. It would be his death and hers," he said, adding:

"She set him up to go, assuring him that she'd follow, but knowing she couldn't really. She had to clean this situation up as best as she could. I think she hoped she could report in and then disappear, but [Maul] trapped her. He said, 'Come to Dathomir and we're going to be working closely together', and you realise, 'Oh my god, she's traded one oppressive boss in for an even scarier dude'. In a way it fuels her ambition and puts her in a position of heightened power, perhaps. Or heightened danger. I thought it was kind of courageous for her."

Could future Solo movies see Qi'ra transform into a powerful Crimson Dawn boss? Or will she become yet another victim of the Syndicate? That's up in the air — indeed any talk of a Solo sequel is up in the air — but Howard seems to have ideas for Emilia Clarke's character.
