The Big Lebowski co-stars Jeff Brides and Julianne Moore are back on set together, but their latest project couldn’t be further away from the Coen Brothers’ sun-bleached SoCal landscape. Directed by Sergei Bodrov, The Seventh Son unfolds in a fantasy universe where demons, ghosts, and witches tread.

Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia) stars as Tom Ward, who becomes apprenticed to a Spook named John Gregory (Bridges) and battles supernatural forces. Moore plays the villain of the piece, the powerful witch Mother Malkin. The first photos have just hit the web, and you can check them out after the jump.

USA Today ran the photos, which show Barnes, Bridges, and Moore in costume.

The Seventh Son was scripted by Matt Greenberg, Charles Leavitt and Steve Knight, who adapted it from the YA novel The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney. Here’s a plot summary:

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory.

In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. Now he has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

Also starring Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina) as one of Malkin’s relatives and Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as another of Gregory’s apprentices, The Seventh Son opens October 18, 2013.
