Fantastic 'Ready Player One' Posters Pay Homage To Your Favorite Movies From The Past

The end of this month will see the release of the anticipated adaptation of Ready Player One. The novel from Ernest Cline is coming to the big screen courtesy of director Steven Spielberg, who seems like the only director who could pull off a pop culture mash-up of this scale – especially with all of its key references to some of the most iconic blockbusters ever made.

Now a new set of Ready Player One posters ups the ante when it comes to mashing up nostalgic movies from decades past. Each of the posters takes the film's digital characters and places them on the poster of a beloved movie from the past. Back to the Future, The Breakfast Club, Beetlejuice, Blade Runner, The Goonies, Risky Business, and more posters were fully recreated with Ready Player One's game avatar characters from The OASIS.

Here are each of the posters with the real movie poster that inspired it (via Imgur and IMP Awards):

Thomage posters were first spotted in the wild on the side of walls and buildings. Instagram user Jeff Avery found them on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, so they might be in various other outdoor locations too:

There also appear to be digital versions of these posters at the Ready Player One experience that's currently in Miami and will be heading to South by Southwest later this month.

Depending on whether the movie is good, it would be cool to have one of these posters to put side-by-side on a wall with one of the real posters. The best choice is probably Back to the Future, but to each their own. Though they're not all winners, this is one of the coolest set of movie posters we've seen in a while.

It remains to be seen if these posters signify that all of these movies will be referenced in some form within the film or not. We've already seen how movies like Back to the Future and The Iron Giant factor in – is a Lost Boys shout-out imminent as well?

Here's the official synopsis for Ready Player One:

The film is set in 2045, with the real world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But people have found salvation in the OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone. The OASIS was created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday died, he left his immense fortune, and total control of the OASIS, to the first person to win three keys, unlocking the door to a digital Easter egg he hid somewhere in his seemingly infinite creation. His challenge launched a game that gripped the entire world, but after five years the scoreboard remained tauntingly empty...until now.

An unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan)—under his avatar name, Parzival—finally conquers the first contest, instantly becoming a celebrity...and a target. Ruthless corporate mogul Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) proves he will stop at nothing to beat Wade and take over the OASIS, and suddenly the virtual stakes are all-too-real. Ultimately realizing he cannot win alone, Wade joins forces with his friends—now the High Five (Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Philip Zhao, Win Morisaki). Together, they are hurled into a reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS.

Ready Player One is set to hit theaters on March 29, 2018.
