War is coming to the Wizarding World.

Things are much more dire in the sequel to the 2016 Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The official trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald drops us off in the middle of Paris, where Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) is preparing for war against his old friend and current foe Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), the most dangerous Dark wizard in the world. And despite his peace-loving ways, magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) finds himself pulled into the oncoming battle.

Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald Trailer

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald takes place in 1927, just a few months after Newt’s adventures in New York. Newt has returned to Europe after accomplishing his mission of freeing an endangered creature, but along the way, he had nearly allowed the wizarding world to be exposed and had let Grindelwald slip through his fingers.

Needless to say, it has kicked off a series of conflicts across the world, as Grindelwald emerges from the shadows to terrorize the wizarding community with his terrible hair once again. A predecessor to Voldemort from the Harry Potter series, Grindelwald was an incredibly powerful wizard who also aspires to gather pure-blood wizards to rule over all others. But Grindelwald isn’t the only one to return from hiding: Credence (Ezra Miller) the Obscurus who nearly destroyed New York, is back. No-Maj New Yorker Jacob (Dan Fogler) and sisters Tina (Katherine Waterston) and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) – will all return in the film.

Here is the synopsis to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne).  But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead.  Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
