Fan casting for Paul Feig‘s female Ghostbusters reboot almost always included Emma Stone. Fans wanted her in the film, and Stone has proved time and time again that she has not only dramatic chops, but a spot on comic sensibility, too. Seeing her busting ghosts seemed like a no-brainer. Then, when the four main leads were announced, Stone wasn’t there. It didn’t really matter, because Feig had knocked casting out of the park with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.
Now, in a new interview, Stone reveals she was offered a role in the film but passed. Read the Emma Stone Ghostbusters quote below.
Stone was talking to the Wall Street Journal about her new role in Woody Allen’s Irrational Man when Ghostbusters was brought up.
The script was really funny. It just didn’t feel like the right time for me. A franchise is a big commitment—it’s a whole “thing.” I think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water.
The actress did say she’d love to play a villain in something though so maybe…Ghostbusters 2? Probably not.
When she talks about stepping away from franchises, Stone is obviously referring to her role as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel. She and her boyfriend Andrew Garfield are actually pretty great in those movies, it’s just the movies around them that suffered. You can imagine the constant criticism, incessant speculation and non-stop questioning about the role are just some of the annoying aspects of being in a big franchise. If Stone was in Ghostbusters, she’d be asked about it for the rest of her career, just like she will be with Spider-Man. While, on the other hand, her role in this Woody Allen movie probably won’t stick with her as long. Unless, of course, the movie is great, which is possible.
