We have learned from multiple sources that a seven-minute prologue for Christopher Nolan‘s new film Dunkirk will play in front of select 70mm IMAX showings of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Hit the jump to learn more about the Dunkirk IMAX preview.
Last month we reported that over a dozen IMAX theaters around the world would be presenting Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars standalone movie in 70mm IMAX 2D film. While the movie was not shot using IMAX’s signature 70mm film cameras, Lucasfilm and Disney is presenting the film in the format in 15 theaters around the world. And for those of you lucky to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in this format, we have learned that Warner Bros is including a seven-minute long prologue for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming war film Dunkirk in front of the movie. Rogue One is a gritty war film, so this seems like a perfect fit.
Christopher Nolan has shot large sequences for many of his films using IMAX’s 70mm cameras, and in the past, the IMAX prologues for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises were previewed before other IMAX presentations in the months before release.
I contacted Warner Bros and IMAX this morning to get official confirmation but have yet to get a response. So I’m not sure if this seven-minute preview will also be included on IMAX digital screenings in addition to the 15 70mm IMAX presentations. IMAX in the past has included some previews on their digital releases, but Nolan’s films have primarily focused on the large format film presentations. We will update and bump up this story if we hear back. Here is the list of IMAX theaters where Rogue One will screen in 70mm film projection:
IMAX, US Space & Rocket Center
IMAX Dome, McWane Center
AMC Universal CityWalk Stadium 19 & IMAX – Universal City
Esquire IMAX – Sacramento
Hackworth IMAX Dome, The Tech Museum
IMAX Dome, Museum of Science & Industry
Blank IMAX Dome, Science Center Iowa
IMAX, Indiana Stare Museum
IMAX Theatre, Minnesota Zoo
OMNIMAX, St. Louis Science Center
Tuttleman IMAX, The Franklin Institute
Omni Theatre Fort Worth Museum of Science & History
Kramer IMAX, Saskatchewan Science Centre
I had a hard time getting tickets to the one theater in southern California screening Rogue One in 70mm, and now that the Dunkirk preview has been revealed, it will probably only get harder to get good seats to these screenings.I’m instead seeing Rogue One opening night at the Burbank IMAX, which is one of their digital theaters. So I do hope that this preview is across all IMAX theaters, although Nolan’s history tells me it probably is limited to the 70mm film screenings.
Nolan captured material and key sequences of Dunkirk using 15 perf 65mm IMAX cameras. These specific sequences, which will expand to fill more of the screen exclusively in IMAX, will deliver unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers. Nolan’s Dunkirk will feature over 100 minutes of IMAX material, according to sources close to the production.
Starring Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Harry Styles, Dunkirk will hit theaters on July 21st, 2017.Cool Posts From Around the Web:
