Fans Want Deadpool To Host 'Saturday Night Live' But It's Probably Not Gonna Happen

It's no secret that Deadpool is all the rage right now. The film exceeded expectations at the box office by nearly double what analysts thought it would take in, and it's on track to win this coming weekend as well. And now that Deadpool is a certified movie star, fans want him to get the chance to do something that not every celebrity gets to do: host Saturday Night Live.

There's a petition at Change.org (where all important movements start) that asks SNL boss Lorne Michaels to have Ryan Reynolds return to studio 8H, but they want him to host the late night sketch show in character as Deadpool. Too bad there's almost zero possibility of that happening.

Here's what the petition from Andrew Stege says:

How would this not be hilarious having Deadpool in sketches, breaking the 4th wall, and inserting some of his brand of humor (obviously toned down a bit for network television)!?!?! I have not watched a full episode of SNL in years because I just haven't been able to stomach an entire episode, but having Deadpool host, star, and be all over the episode would get the DVR set so I can watch it again and again!!! Not to mention, depending on the musical guest, how awesome would it be to have some Deadpool interpretive dancing while the musical guest was playing? There's unlimited possibilities!!!

Aside from the fact that his criticism of SNL is mostly unfounded since he hasn't watched a full episode in years, you know he's serious because of all the superfluous question marks and exclamation points. The petition over at Change.org (which couldn't even be bothered to have a quality image of Deadpool) has already hit 25,000 signatures at the time of this writing. It's gained steam relatively quickly, but that's not the kind of number that's going to convince someone like Lorne Michaels to do something that would drastically change the style of the show and what he and the entire cast and crew pull off each week.

Plus, there's the issue that even though Saturday Night Live can get pretty risqué in its late night time slot, Deadpool would undoubtedly be reserved in what he could and couldn't say. There's also the problem of having Deadpool speak through his mask on live television, because in the movie there was plenty of ADR done for the character's dialogue.

Having Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool host the show would be a gimmick and nothing more. One could argue that the idea of SNL itself is a gimmick, but it's one that works far more often than people who watch it intermittently give it credit for. And while I agree that there could be some entertainment value from having Deadpool interrupt sketches or attempt to become various characters throughout the show, it's doesn't seem like something that Lorne Michaels would be willing to do.

But there is some middle ground to be found here. Ryan Reynolds could always come back and host Saturday Night Live as Ryan Reynolds, and surely some kind of Deadpool sketch could be incorporated. Hell, I'd be fine with Deadpool simply doing the monologue for Reynolds to make some fans happy. But having Deadpool host an entire episode of Saturday Night Live is not a good idea, and I just don't think it would work as well comedically as some of these zealous fans think that it would.

Another possible idea would be to merely have Deadpool interrupt the episode of Saturday Night Live that Ryan Reynolds already hosted back in 2009. His monologue is already about how superhero movies and romantic comedies are very similar:

So maybe having Deadpool just mock the episode, pausing for breakaway gags and commentary, would be something fun to do. Or if Reynolds is asked back to host, maybe they can do that with the new episode afterwards. Either way, this isn't something that's going to happen at all, so sign the petition if it makes you feel better, but don't count on it actually getting anything done other than maybe getting Reynolds back to host SNL again.

Would you want to see Deadpool hosting Saturday Night Live?
